I wonder if anyone knows about the relation of stabilizing menstrual cycle and Omega 3. I have had problems with no periods for 4 years, and without being menopausal according to my doctor. I have not changed any exercise or diet during these 4 years other than no flax seeds. I used to add flax to my food while living in Sweden, and when I moved to the US I didn't know the name and didn't see it in the store so I forgot about it. Re-entered flax to my menu about 5 weeks ago and got the period back. Can this be a coincident or does anyone know if there is a relation between period and Omega 3 (which is present in flax). I am also thinking that I am eating less Omega 3 rich fish since I moved to the US and that can add to the explanation.

here is what I found about it:

Flax, like soy, is a phytoestrogen. Phytoestrogens are estrogen-like substances that are found in plants. Flax is the richest known plant source of phytoestrogens. Phytoestrogens act as a natural hormone therapy and help to stabilize hormonal levels.

pgm012197,

Thank You! That makes perfect sense and explains this relationship, I will make sure to keep a healthy level of linseeds in my diet.

i found this really interesting. i take a flaxseed supplement and have the seeds in my porridge and homemade muesli bars (i'm veggie so I want those omega oils!!). no period problems here but had no idea about phytoestogen and its effects. i had a little google and it seems that exactly how it functions in the body is still anyones guess but interesting all the same.
