I have an link to an article that I would like to post but I don't kNow how to and am not sure if its allowed. If someone can tell me how that would be great. I have purchased some but have not started taking it yet. But from what I have read it has many other advantages as well. Flax seed oil is considered a "good fat".
Part of the article said that adding flaxseed oil to foods, or taken with a meal, creates a feeling of satiation (feeling of fullness and satisfaction following a meal). The essential fats in flaxseed oil cause the stomach to retain food for a longer period of time as compared to no-fat or low-fat foods. The addition of flax oil to food also results in a gradual release of this combination into the small intestine. The physiological effect is a slow, sustained rise in blood sugar, then a prolonged plateau of blood sugar. Ultimately, the blood sugar undergoes a slow and gradual drop. You will experience a corresponding feeling of prolonged energy, stamina and satisfaction with no immediate hunger pangs following the meal. The net result is that you feel fuller, longer, and actually eat fewer calories in the long run than if you would have chosen a no-fat, low-fat diet.

Flax is great! We don't use flax oil in our house, but I add freshly ground flax to lots of stuff...my morning oatmeal, smoothies, muffins, pancakes, even mashed potatoes!

I use that stuff because I heard it is good for the skin and great for perimenopause....I don't remember why. I also heard that someone used it for scars and stuff. Must be miracle stuff. LOL
Flax seed is a good plant source of Omega fatty acids, though they aren't quite as bioavailable as fish oil.
It can have a multitude of beneficial effects. In it's milled state it also adds fiber to the diet. Just make sure you mix it with something, instead of eating it straight as it's powdery consistancy makes it easy to aspirate also.
It is also a good source of Lignan's a type of phyto estrogen (plant based), which some people claim my help have health benifits (the jury is out on which and how much).

I eat The Baker's Flaxseed bread and I love it. Glad to know it might be doing more than holding the insides of my sandwich in!
if you use flax seed in things (breads, for instance) make sure you grind it up first (I use one of those little coffee grinders). If it's whole, that's how it exits your system (ahem) and you don't get all the health benefits. Seeds have the same goodness as the oil, btw, but also have things like minerals, and a little fiber.
my nutrition guy, Patrick Holford, recommends taking 3 parts flax seed, 1 part sesame seeds, 1 part sunflower seeds, 1 part pumpkin seeds (pepitas). Mix it up, put it in a jar, and store it in the fridge. 1 tablespoon 5 out of 7 days.

Oh! You've got to get it! I've read a LOT on the subject, being in your 40's is *great*, isn't it??! yikes! and that's one my absolute favorites. He also wrote "What you doctor won't tell you about menopause", which is similar but a little more targeted to women who've already hit menopause. I have both and refer to them frequently. Another good one is 'Natural Hormone Balance for Women' by Uzzi Reiss, and "Natural Hormone Replacement for women over 45" by Jonathan Wright.
The shared premise for all these books is progesterone supplementation (and/or estrogen and testosterone and dhea, if you need it) with bio-available hormones. If you don't know what bio-available hormones are, they're hormones that are engineered from plant sources but made to be molecularly identical to the hormones our bodies produce. Since they can't be patented (to patent a drug it needs to be molecularly unique) there's no pharma rep pushing it to your doc, so most "traditional" doctors are ignorant of the benefits of bio-identicals.
I was just talking about this with my Pilates instructor who said she has two mid-40's students who were both struggling with sudden and stubborn weight gain and emotions out of whack. She sent them to her doc, who specializes in bio-identical hormone replacement, and they both lost the weight in a matter of only a couple of months and almost immediately were feeling more stable emotionally. I'm doing over-the-counter supplementation which is pretty low dose, but even that little bit helps. A doctor can prescribe higher doses, though, and can do custom-blends of the hormones you need. Bio-identical hormones are mixed at a compounding pharmacy that makes the stuff from scratch, so they can mix exactly the dosage and the hormones that you need. Cool, huh?

Okay, I had read this when the thread was active, made a mental note to look for flaxseed at the health food store, and bought some today. Now what do I do with it?! I'm not going to bake anything in the near future (except brownies to give away). Should I add it to my morning cereal (Special K, Cheerios, or GoLean)? Drop some in my coffee yogurt? Sprinkle it on steamed broccoli? Be prepared to floss flaxseeds out from between my teeth? What? What? Someone please advise me!! Thanks!!!
I have an oatmeal thats comes with flax in it. its awesome. A dr. told me that flax seeds can be hard to digest so if you do the seed thing make sure you put it in something warm or wet to help soften it up so the body can digest and use it up ;)
flax seeds need to be cracked to get at their yummy goodness. If you put them in whole, that's exactly how they'll come out!
Get a little electric coffee grinder. I've got one just for grinding flax.

I buy ground flax seed meal and store it in the refrigerator. It seems to keep just fine, although I realize that freshly ground is better. I add a couple of tablespoons to all kinds of things. It's the filler in my turkey burgers - it soaks up all the juices and keeps the burger very moist, and adds fiber and those good fats. I also add it to my oatmeal and sprinkle it on cereal.
