Flaxseed fans? Anyone?
I can't live without my flaxseed meal! It has lots of fiber, it doesn't make me feel bloated, yet fills me up until lunch. I usually have 2 heaping tablespoons with my cereal in the AM.
This is great and everything, but anyone else have suggestions on other ways to eat my flaxseed meal? I've tried it in smoothies, but that's about it. Since it's grainy, you have to be creative in what foods you put it in..
If anyone thinks of something good, lemme know!

I use flaxseed oil in my smoothies but never used the meal. I think Tracyvision uses the meal. not sure if she will be around but I know she puts it on everything!
I put it on ice cream as a topping. Like, instead of ground nuts.
I am! I put flaxseed meal into anything I used to put bread crumbs in, and I add it to my oatmeal too. It keeps turkey meatloaf and burgers juicy, much more so than bread crumbs. It makes a very crispy topping on baked casseroles or broiled meats and fish. I love the stuff! I store mine in the refrigerator.
Hi,
Your post caught my eye. I actually dont know much about Flaxseed! What are the health benefits of it?
thanks!

slappy, do you know me or what? you knew when I saw flax in the topic heading that I'd have to check in! ;D
We go through tons of flax around here. I grind my fresh in a little electric coffee grinder. I put it in my oatmeal, in my smoothies, if you bake it's great because it holds up to high baking temps so I put it in muffins, bread and pizza dough. You can also sprinkle it on mashed potatoes or on salads.
nyadas, here's a great summary on the benefits of flax (personally I eat it to up my omega 3's):
World's Healthiest Foods Page on Flax
remember to keep your flaxseeds/meal in the fridge. And if you get the seeds, you have to grind them or they pass through you whole!

I used flaxseed in yogourt and it is soooo good with some fruits or anything you have on your hand :)

Thanks Tracyvision,
Thats a really helpful website. I am going to get flaxseed tomorrow and have it with my yogurt for breakfast!

Michelle

I started putting 1/4 a cup of flaxseeds in my morning oatmeal. Keeps me full longer than with out.
I love that world's healthiest food site, refer to it all the time. I like that they don't have an agenda.
The guy that first turned me onto flax, about 8 years ago, was Dr. David Williams (he has a great newsletter and I highly recommend his vitamins). You can buy flax at places like Whole Foods, or health food stores, but I still get mine online from him, I trust his sources. He sells a starter flax kit with a grinder.
And I can't believe I forgot to mention my most common source of flax! I make a batch of homemade granola every week with 1/2 a cup of flax in it (also has pumpkin seeds, and sunflower seeds, the mixture Patrick Holford - my nutrition guru - recommends). Patrick recommends 1 tablespoon of ground seeds a day, btw.

Wow, those are all really great suggestions! Thanks for your input everyone!
I take one to two capsules of flax seed oil in the morning. I've been finding when I don't, my brain just doesn't work the same. Previously I used to buy flax seed oil, but I hated the taste of it, although putting it in smoothies (plain fat free yogourt w/frozen berries) did help to mask the taste a bit. I don't bother buying the grains since our bodies aren't able to digest unground flax seed, and even if I had a motar and pestle, I can't see myself grounding them on a daily basis.
oil is more convenient, especially if you can take it in capsule form. but I don't find grinding to be bothersome at all. I have a little electric coffee grinder especially for grinding flax and pumpkin seeds. Throw in a couple of tablespoons, give it a whirl and it's done.
Also, if you grind up the seeds you're getting additional fiber, and minerals that aren't in the oil. But it's all good!

bought some ground flaxseed last night! we were using the oil too but wanted to try the seed.
Tracy- I told Jason you said he had to! LOL so he did! LOL

I use both the oil and meal. I put 2 tsps in my oatmeal. I also would put 2 Tbls in it on occasion, but now it adds too many clories so I just use the oil - this is my Healthy oil for the day.
It did take some getting used to the flavor, but now I can't eat oatmeal without the flax.
I am going to start using it in the suggestions above. Some sound really yummy and its a way to get my hubby to eat it without his knowledge. His cholesterol is outrageous so it could be my way of getting it down.

slappy, so now I'm Jason's nutrition Mistress? Yes! Mistress Tracy! I WILL eat flaxseed! Why am I suddenly picturing myself in thigh high leather boots with a riding crop?!! ;O
seriously though, make sure you keep it in the fridge.
