When in flippity %@*# did a BMI under 20 become considered underweight??
These are the standards according the World Health Organization. Is America just yearning to become a nation of fatties?? I've seen people on this site JUMP on someone clocking in at 19.9. That is just absurd. I know this site is a breeding ground for people with disordered eating and body image, but to tell someone standing at 5' 2" and 108 that they are underweight is lidicrous. My entire life I was told that 110lbs was my "ideal" weight. Although it is not MY ideal weight because I have a large bone structure, it is not right to say that someone with a smaller structure is unhealthy at that weight. I want to know who decided that, in America, larger is better and below 20 is underweight here. Why are we any different from the rest of the world????? Because we WANT to be the fattest nation around? I think that is just adding to our supersized beliefs. I don't know. I'm just perturbed. It's just like making sizes larger and larger every year and sticking a size 6 on the tag so that someone that is obviously overweight feels "thin".

i guess the dsm better change their criteria for the weight of an anorexic person from under a 17.5 bmi then.
DSM-IV-TR doesn't actually specify a BMI for a diagnosis of Anorexia Nervosa. It's defined by Refusal to maintain at or above 85% expected weight, and amenorhea, along with various psychological symptoms. Not that it's really germane to this post, but I'm kind of annoying like that.
As for a size 6 being fat, I'm just going to assume you were trying to make a point and just missed the mark. I'm going to assume this, because if not, I would find that a very rude and insensitive thing to say.
I agree, though, that there are people with unhealthy approaches to nutrition on CC. I agree on this, because I've been one of those people. However, your cynicism and defensiveness makes me wonder how pure your intentions on CC are.
BMI is a load of rubbish anyway, i've never understood why anyone pay's it the blindest bit of attention.
My husbands BMI has him at morbidly Obese, and he's not fat he's just a body builder, his bady fat rating is in the mid to low teens hardly the chunky monkey his BMI reads him at.
Then mine has my at boarderline under weight but i have quite a small skeleton and personally i don't think it's fair to read my weight / height comparison in the same way as someone with a denser heavier bone structure, because quite franky thier bones could easily weigh 10 - 15lb more than mine do.
Even though im already borderline (BMI of 20) im still actually trying to lose weight atm with the help of a personal trainer/nutritionist and she certainly doens't belive im "under weight" infact she even suggested that i have about 17lb of fat to lose... for comparisions sake 17lb would take me to a BMI of 17.3, and that's going off the advice of a proffessional who belives thats the weight i will look and feel best at, and she in no way concider's it underweight for someone of my build.
