Fluctuation in weight problems!

Quote  |  Reply

I am about sick and tired of the fluctuation going on with my weight!  It's rather ridiculous if you ask me!!  One week I'm 205, the next I'm 207, and then I'm 2010.  Last week on the 15th according to the Dr.'s office's scale I weighed 207.  Since then I have continued as usual, but I realize I'm eating less calories (which is fantastic), AND I've added in 30 minutes of workout after my 1.25 mile walk.  And today, one week later, I weight 2010!?!?!?! How is this possible?  I know results don't happen over night, but can't these scales at least give me one reason to continue on my path to weight loss?  I feel like Daniel from the Biggest Loser, poor kid.

Anyway, despite this fluctuation I'm happy.  I'm not happy about the weight gain.  But I'm hella happy over the fact that I have walked 1.25 and STILL worked out for 30 minutes!  I may be gaining weight (for whatever reason) but I feel fricken fantastic that I'm working out, and that it's not actually all that bad :)....

Oh, and to add to my happiness, I have not drank a soda since Sunday!!!  Not even diet! :)  I'm super happy for myself.

I'm on the road to a better person, even if the scales don't reflect that.  I come home from work, I spend time with my daughter, I eat dinner, let my tummy rest for about 20 minutes, then we take on our 1.25 mile walk and I come home and spend time with my grandmother, once she leaves I watch television until it's time to get my daughter to sleep (around 8 p.m.) She goes to sleep and I work out for a half hour and then I sit and read for an hour, and then I go to sleep.  Not only have I taken on working out for 30 minutes a day, but I've taken on reading too...it's wonderful!

Don't give up ashlee!  Remember that adding strength training to your workout schedule usually means you'll see a few extra pounds at first because you're building muscle.  You'll find a lot of advice on the boards here about not letting the scale be your only measure of success, and this is definitely one of those times.

In a little while if you keep on with all these positive changes you'll totally start to see results.  Especially once all the new muscles you're building give your metabolism a bit of a jump start!

Don't get discouraged!  Just keep on with all your great changes!

Good luck!

Thank you for your response, it's really reassuring considering this is really the first time attempting weight loss...I should rephrase that - my first time keeping track of trying to lose weight.  So, it is all rather new to me.  But thanks for the reassuring comment.

Ashlee, you are not alone. My attempt at weight loss last year was like that. I felt better but just was not seeing any loss of pounds. I thought I was the only person in the world that could eat less and exercise more and gain weight. It was very discouraging and sorry to say I finally gave up when a doctor said, well you are not going to lose weight by exercising.  What a buzz killer. I said, OK if not then I am not going to exercise. I quickly slipped back to my I don't care attitude and utlimately gave up.  Doctors should never tell me something discouraging.

This year the same doctor addressed my weight gain. Darn will she make up her mind, she tells me to exercise. Well she angered me this time. I cancelled all appts with her for four months and started a weightloss program of my own. I walk/run, strength train, and play with my wii fit, also trying out belly dancing. Eventually the weight starts coming off and the bonus, like yours, is that you feel better and feel satisfaction, better personal image.

Hope you keep the momentum going. You are doing the right things.

Hi Ashlee,

I started out where you are! And when I started working out and eating less...I thought "I just wish I KNEW this really will work"...well, 9 months later, I can tell you ...It works! I have had so many times where I feel like I am doing everything "right" and I gain weight! Then I have had months where I stay the same weight.....it has been a roller coaster ride! Just keep at it....don't let the scale get to you, eventually it always catches up! I am at 168.8 now..and continuing to slowly loose.

We have a Mom's thread in the "Games and Challenges" area....it would be great to have you there and you can get x-tra help and support from mom's who have (and are) there :)

By the way...I work out on a treadmill about 30-40 minutes 4-5 days a week, and eat between 1700-2100 calories a day. I am 5'6"....(so not over the top)

Keep up the great work! It is worth it to feel good and get healthy!

Oh...by the way, I met Dan from biggest loser in the beginning of this year! He lives in my area! Check out my picture...it is him! (I was star-struck....felt like a fool!)That was between his seasons on the show...and he continue's to look great!

You go girl!  Numbers ar not important.  Health and happiness are coveted possessions!  It sounds like your have your priorities straight!

Hi. First I am glad you see that in life you are making progress that is great. It really sounds like you are achieving many goals. As for weight fluctuation I have been told by many nutritionist that a body can vary from day to day a few pounds. It is more about a trend or range. Can you identify in your current life what some problem times or things are that you can work on changing? Such as maybe skipping a meal or waiting too long to eat that may set you up to eat extra later? This may not be you but an example. Keep up the hard work and positive thinking. A positive mindset I think can really help the physical.

Unless I am not reading it, i don't see where you've listed how many calories you are eating. Are you eating enough? You can actually thwart your weight loss by eating too little. Try to eat at least 1200 calories a day - you probably need even more than that. That may help. Also, make sure you are eating the right things. It isn't enough to limit calories - the choices you make may not be helping. I think your percentage of fat should be about 20% of your calories - I might be a little off on that - maybe someone else can pipe in.

I also use the food pyramid to guide how much I eat in each category - you might be surprised by what you find when you look at this - i know I was. Told me I was actually eating too little fat and not enough grains - who woulda thunk it?! (From years of low fat, low carb dieting....) When I went by the food pyramid, I doubled my weight loss. And felt no deprivation whatsoever.

Another thought - buy a new scale! I know it sounds ridiculous, but I was killing myself on my old scale - it just wouldn't budge, or it would say I had gained, and I was so frustrated. I bought a new scale (and it happened to match the weight i got at the doctor's office) and it seems much more accurate. Threw the old one in the trash.

You sound like you are on the right track, however. Good for you on the walking and workouts! What a great start! Pretty soon, you will find you have enough stamina and energy to crank it up a little. Try walking a little further each week. You'll be pleasantly surprised! Keep up the good work!
