fluid retention still hips, abs and upper thighs

Quote  |  Reply

how long does the fluid retention. i know its fluid retention as its really firm and swolllen ( at least it fills the cellulite) but seriously its so sadening, as in the last 3 weeks i am up at least 1 1/2 dress sizes in my hips. that is where i really see it. Im so scared at getting sick ( recovering bulimic) as now i fear that if i vomit ( not self induced) it will return. i drink at least 21/2 l of water plus herbal tea, no sodas, sugar. very limited wheat/dairy. the puirer my diet is the bigger i grow. then i look at my friends who eat and processed food and drink soda and they dont have this. I m working out a couple of days a week ahhhhhhh. has anyone else gone throught this as a recovering bulimic that can share with my a light at the end of the tunnel thanks

hey golfer...

i could have written that myself. in fact, i was going to post today. i am at the end of my rope with this fluid retention stuff. i've done all the research and know all the physiological reasons behind it, but i still have trouble convincing myself sometimes that it really is just fluid weight.  for me it's all over, but i struggle mostly with the swelling of my thighs, and my upper arms when i get up the morning.  i've made some really "positive" changes in my diet and nutrition and overall health, so it really sucks to have to experience this now.  i'm following all the recommendations, ie elevation, mild exercise (walking), swimming, protein, blah blah blah, but the edema persists. and my weight keeps jumping up.

maybe i should just start praying for spontaneous diuresis... ;)

message me if you want to talk more.  i thought maybe i was the only one going through this....

Hello-

I can assure you that yes, it willllll get better!!!! Don't give up.  I just went through all this last week and it was horrible.  I have not thrown up in almost a month now after being severly bulimic for about three years. and my body is finally flushing out the water.  Really, within the last week, my face and body shrunk so much my boyfriend even asked if I was being "unhealthy" again. (throwing up) My therapist told me it is due to the fact that your body cannot process water correctly (let alone food) and since it is used to dehydration and starvation, it takes a few weeks to regulate itself.  So basically you cant do much, but wait it out, and tell yourself over and over that it is water weight NOT FAT!  i really reccommend you keep doing cardio daily and one thing that really helped me was to eat oatmeal in the morning.  And take vitamins!  Your electrolytes are probably all kinds of messed up and that helps.  I also stopped cramming myself full of huge huge salads, because it was making me really bloated too.  I try to slow down and portion out a little meal balanced with protien and a tiny bit of carbs.  I really hope this helps.  I know how scared and terrible you feel!  But you will get through it, and you will feel so much better! Hang in there!

ohhhh gosh thank you.

i have been severely anorexic for the past almost 15 years, and started purging (never binged, but purged excessively to the point where i retained nothing)...so i know i've screwed up my body.

i am so thankful to hear that maybe there is hope.

am i correct in understanding that it took about a month for your body to release the fluids?

i started recovering about 5 months ago, but was still purging until a couple weeks ago (i kept reverting because the edema was scaring me).

thank you for sharing and giving me some hope
