How can I follow The Pyramid and cut calories too?
Asked by shaynewell on Oct 26, 2009 in Nutrition

Following The Pyramid seems like a lot of food and a lot of calories that I really don't need.  How do you decide what to keep and what to get rid of?

Answer

My Pyramid takes care of your need for nutrients, while cutting calories meets your need to lose weight - a different goal.  But it's easy to satisfy both needs if you choose lower calorie foods from each food group.  For instance, on 1400 calories a day, a person needs 4 ounce-equivalents from the Meat & Bean Group.  You could choose 4 ounces of turkey breast at 120 calories or 4 oz of pork spare ribs at 290 calories.  Likewise, you could meet 25% of your daily Milk Group requirement with a chocolate snack pudding at 160 calories or with 4 oz of skim milk at 43 calories.  Realize that high fat foods are higher in calories.  It makes sense to save your splurges for special occasions and train yourself to prefer low calorie foods at other times.
