Will following the same excercise routine stop showing results?

I have started gym after a 6 month break. This has led to excess flab on tummy, thighs and hips. I went from a Size 0 to Size 4 jeans.

I got to gym 6 days a week between 1-1.15 hours every day. I was wondering if I stick to the same routine will my body reach a plateau and refuse to shape up. I did the same stuff 6 months back also and I was following the same routine for months.

Im 25 yrs,120lbs, thin upper body but waist below I have excess flab I follow the following routine:

I start with the cross trainer for 10 mins, then I do leg press, leg curl and leg extension(since most of my flab is on my hips and thighs). These I do 3 sets each. Then I do abs on the incline and finally I run  for about 20 mins.

On alternate days when I dont do leg press, leg curl and leg extension I do other exercises like butt  blaster and other machines for abs and butt.

I am also on a diet and eat about 1000-1200 cals a day.

Is this a good routine.

My first impression is you are not eating enough to lose weight or eat nutritiously. Use the tools on the website to determine the minimum amount of calories you should be eating. As a general rule, you should never eat below 1200 calories.

Regarding your workout routine, if it's working for you now then there is no need to change it unless you are just bored. At some point you may reach a plateau, at which time you can change it around a bit.

Also keep in mind that by doing specific weights - such as the leg press, curl, and extension - in order to lose "flab" in your hips and thighs, it doesn't work that way. You cannot pinpoint fat reduction in any part of your body. All you are doing is strengthening those particular muscles.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for you reply, I was thinking that by building leg muscles i can burn the fat there. Is my thinking right?

Yeah, I was going to say you're not eating enough. Trying upping your calorie intake a bit.

Exercise routines may become LESS effective with time, you might show less results, but they won't become uneffective. If you do the elliptical every day for a long period of time, your body will become used to the motion and it won't burn quite as many calories, however it will still use calories. So it might help to shake up your routine a bit, but the most important thing is that you are doing something that you can stick with.
No, you can't spot reduce.

No, unfortunately it doesn't work that way though many of us wish it did!  Basically your body will lose weight how it wants.  Generally if you add weight in your hips and thighs first, for example, then that will be the last place for it to come off.

Yeah, I agree with them ^

Up your calorie intake, and your exercise program will work better. You sound fine as you are though. :)

Thanks for the replies. I guess i will increase my calorie intake and try different exercise routines. Is it good to take muscle milk before workout or after?

I don't even know what muscle milk is?  But eating protein either before or after you work out is good for helping to repair the muscle.  More knowledgeable people than I have written about it in the various forums.  Do a little research and you will probably find the answers you're looking for regarding that.

Hi Bliss, I can relate because I have the same body type and I'm the same size.  Isn't it annoying when you look at your beautiful lean upper body, the look down at your not so lean thighs and bum?  Ouch!  That's a zingger!

Firstly I would up your calories, 1300 is my lucky number.  If I eat to little, I never loose pounds.  Insead I loose fast, then gain a fair portion back.  A great way to up your cals it to add more lean protien.  Protien is an amazing thing, no matter how much you eat your body will never break it down and store it as fat.  Another thing to remember is that you can't spot reduce.  Your rear won't get smaller if you work the muscles harder.  You may even see it increase if you work those muscles to hard, the muscles will be growing under the layer of fat, that's why a lot of people focus on buringin the fat then toning the muscles.  So don't over do it!  You may need to change your routine after a month or two, but I won't worry about it for a while.

I recommend hopping over to the fitness forum and read up a bit over there but all in all your workout won't reduce fat from any area worked more - you will have nice muscles under the fat but your body will take the fat from the areas it wants to first.  Also if y ou don't eat enough you will not lose anything as starvaton mode will kick in first.

YOu do need to change up routines every few weeks to keep your body from not working as hard.  I'd also work all muscles only so you don' get lopsided once the weight does come off.

Not always true, I gain ONLY in butt and tighs so naturally that's where I'm losing those extra pounds.

What everyone has said is true- you can't spot reduce.
But at the same time, if you just keep eating right (meaning upping your calories, at least a tad!) and exercising, those areas that bother you will eventually become muscle, muscle, muscle- which is much nice than any fat =3
Just keep working at it, and it'll eventually come off.

You're already at a beautiful size, so don't be too worried!

That's why I said "generally".
