Food Inc - anyone seen it?

Quote  |  Reply

I just saw this film last night and think it should be essential viewing, especially for those of us here concerned about the nutritional value and health benefits/risks of what we're putting in our and our families bodies.

Here's a review: http://movies.nytimes.com/2009/06/12/movies/1 2food.html

and  the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QqQVll-MP3I

Anyone seen it, have thoughts?

and an interview with two of the creators: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXmF_erEv1o&am p;feature=related

Looks good - I love documentaries - but I have to ask: does Food Inc contain animal death/abuse scenes? I assume it does because the subject is factory farming... :(

I recently saw a documentary called "The Future of Food" about genetic modification in food production (trailer here) which knocked my socks off.

Yes I've seen the Future of Food as well, also very good. This one covers a wider range of topics than just GMO's, though not in it as specific detail.

There are images of slaughterhouses, yes. But, in my opinion, if you're going to eat it, you ought to be able to face where it comes from.

It's pure propaganda, if the posted trailer is a good preview.  It operates on paranoia.  When the premises is about "corporations" and paranoid "out to get me" schemes, it's ideas aren't new.  It's pure kookiness to go around life looking for those out to "getcha".  One won't see a film about Big Natural/Organic, and all the junkscience "organic/natural" is based on.  I just thank God for the food we have.  Here is some real science.  Your body cannot tell the difference between organic and regular sources of nutrients.  It only knows, for example, that vitamin C is just vitamin C.  It's the one and only chemical the body knows, no matter if it comes from an orange or a pill.

I have a question about Food Inc. I went to my local Blockbuster and looked it up (beacuse its all the rage in these forums) and it was a movie- not a documentary!!!! I was very disappointed! So, are there two Food Inc.'s?

First of all, Food Inc looks at Big Organic, which personally I don't really agree with. Organics wasn't the focus of the film - they hardly talked about pesticides at all.

Maybe you should actually watch it before you decide what its all about. Corporations are accountable to their owners and stockholders, and their primary responsibility is to increase profit. They aren't accountable to you, or to the government, and I hate to break it to you, but they might not always have your best interests at heart.

You are correct that vitamin C is vitamin C - however - the problem is not in the nutrients (which BTW have diminished in the food supply by about 30% over the last 50 years or so) but in the crap that comes with it.

Pesticides, hormones, genetically altered material, salmonella, even actual poisonous substances from offshore producers.

There is a need to be a little paranoid, because our food chain is suspect.

That said: I doubt half the food on the shelves labelled 'organic' actually is.

Except that they are accountable to you, in that you are a consumer and therefore the source of their profits.
