Can food fight baldness?
Asked by anonymous on Sep 07, 2009 in Nutrition

I understand that hair is mainly composed of proteins, and hair growth is reflected by the food that we take.  Could you suggest the best foods for the same?

Answer

There have been no conclusive studies linking male pattern baldness (receding front hairline and/or thinning hair at the top of the head) to diet or particular foods as either a cause or treatment.  Hair-thinning - but not male pattern baldness - may be related to a deficiency of protein, iron, zinc or biotin.  Blood loss and very restrictive diets can create those deficiencies, but they are easily prevented by eating balanced diet.  An unproven theory links a diet high in protein from meat to high levels of a type of testosterone, DHT, that causes the hair follicles to stop producing.  Read more about hairloss treatments for men at About.com.
