does anybody else's jaw drop at some of the stuff they make on the food channel? Giada stays skinny but she makes some crazy stuff...racheal too. But Paula...I just saw her deep fry lasagna and Macaroni and cheese. crazy..eh?
I know what you're talking about! Paula literally uses four sticks of butter in almost everything (exaggerating). She also makes the strangest, "fattest" sounding foods. I love her though, haha.
iam watching her right now. ......*there goes in the butter* lol . .seriously .. she frys everything but is it just me but no matter how much butter she puts in i STILL WANT SOME ! haha .. i want to try some of everyone cooking on there
Hey, I watched her deep fry ice cream sandwiches last night! They looked like Skinny Cows, so maybe that cuts down on the overall damage ?!?!?!
If you really watch and think about what they cook, Giada and Rachael both cook pretty healthily MOST of the time, using small amounts of butter when they use it, primarily using EVOO, using very lean meats, and Giada in particular, using lots of fresh veggies. Paula never, ever said she was cooking anything healthy. :-) In fact, she seemed a little annoyed and downright pissed off the time they network, ummm, suggested that she do a show that contained ALL HEALTHY dishes. Rachael looks to have lost a few pounds, not that she NEEDED TO, as she looked to be a healthy weight (keeping in mind that the camera adds 5 to 10 pounds). Anyway, don't get me to talking about FN. I don't get to watch it much anymore.
ive made plenty of the recipes from foodnetwork, they are all very good. some are rather fattening, but of course, no ones forcijng you to shovel fried chicken down your nasty gullet.
you just need moderation with everything.
My gym times usually coincide with Rachel Ray and the Barefoot Contessa. IMHO Rachel Ray uses rather unsensible amouts of EVOO. Granted, that's better than butter, but you can cook a meal with less than half a bottle of the stuff. And don't get me started on Ina Garten. Her dishes look good - but does a dessert for 6 people really need a pound of cream cheese and a pint of whipped cream?
That being said, once you're aware it's easy to slim down many of the recipes without problem, so I still love to watch!
Rachael Ray says her food is healthy, but most people would disgree. howver, I don't thing she's talking in terms of calories-- moreso philosphy. you can drench veggies in EVOO, but they're still veggies. And while she may not be the skinniest person on the food network, she does use healthy ingredients.
p.s. not to say she's heavy-- she's normal.
food network is evil :D we have two food networks..one in HD...god save me..everything but the smell o vision....
I just made a Giada dish...butternut squash pasta dish.....its pretty yummy and a very healthy (as in large) portion for...about 350 cals...of course i used 1 tbsp of EVOO rather than 3..but whatever :D
It's true, you can often lighten up some of what they cook, use less, omit, change, etc., to suit your own tastes/preferences. It's also about interpretation and individual. For example, it makes me rather upset to hear Rachael say cooking a meal of beef tenderloin that includes a buttload of Parmigiano-Reggiano (and not the cheap versions!) for 4 people is a "really economical meal." I also get mad when she talks about cooking chicken breasts COATED with Parm in a "screaming hot pan" for like 15 minutes and hers supposedly come out all golden brown and delicious. Ummm, let's just say the phrase "results not typical" immediately comes to mind. This does not occur under normal circumstances in the average kitchen without a lot of praying and a little sprinkle of magic fairy dust. Other than being sick to death in general of Rachael Ray and not being able to go 5 minutes without seeing her somewhere, I do like her and have learned a lot of helpful tips and tricks from her. I have my favorites on there, ones I don't particularly care for, and ones I cannot stand, just like most everyone does, I'm sure. ;-)
what about Anna Olsen, the pastry chef on 'Sugar?' Some of the stuff she bakes is LOADED with chocolate, sugar and butter, and she stays so thin!!!
I think I read in a magazine somewhere that her secret is moderation, but if I had to look at desserts all day, moderation would be out of the question! Especially since she usually has to make more than one to show every step of how to make it.
Maybe she gives it all to the cameramen :)
how do you pronounce Giada? lol sorry...
i like the new girl in that show um simply deliccoso (don't know how to spell) they say she's the new rachael ray.
lol it's "jee-ah-duh". yeah i guess racheal and giada maek some healthy stuff..most the time. racheals portions are big but then thats the portion control business. and Ina Garten's almost gettin up there like Paula Deen with the ingredients. oh man...Paula's Party's on.
Candy Guy: "and a half a pound a' butter..."
Paula: "Just a half a pound?"
she seems like a sweet lady but my cholesterol spikes just watchin some of her shows
ooo paula's party..the candy one..im watching it too :D but trust me..its worse in HD...on a huge TV...just like the commercials with the guy burning his hand but its just the tv...hmph...
Ina can be ok things, just a tad expensive and unhealthy (like the paella which she kept pronouncing weird with lobster...) but things can be modified to make it healthier/cheaper...no dough for me! she always seems to make a lot of things with dough
I like Alton Brown...hes so fun and has really good tips...bf made some of his ice cream last night (bad bf..bad bf...) the bite I had was quite tasty...too bad we cant find decently priced vanilla beans anywhere!
A little of Rachael can go a very long way...everything in moderation right...I do like the Ingrid chick from the dilicioso show...she makes yummy food! this morning it was cuban burgers, a minty peach ice cream shake, and plantain soup!
I love the food network channel. They have a lot of great ideas that you can use and make your own to fit your health needs. For example, on one of the shows over a year ago I saw them make a wrap with chicken and all kinds of peppers. They used a lot of olive oil for cooking but I modified it by using 1 tablespoon of extra light olive oil and used red, green, yellow, and jalapeno peppers then added some onions. I use it on a large LaFactory Tortilla wrap which has tons of fiber in it and low fat. Like 80 calories per wrap and the veggies are around 70 calories. So a very filling low fat meal. As long as you really look at what your needs are you can modify anything on those shows.
I like Rachel Ray because she uses a lot of everyday easy to find ingredients and you can change the portions to smaller portions and get what you want out of the shows. It is very sensible most of the time. You just need to really look at the recipes first and make sure that you can modify them to fit your needs.
I love Paula Deen but never have made any of her recipes because they are loaded with butter and fattening foods. However, she is a southern cook and that is usually what happens with southern food.
As for Giada she cooks all italian which is mostly made of up pastas which are very high in carbs. So if you are watching your carbs beware. It is nice to just sit and enjoy the shows though because you can learn a lot of great tips and ideas off of all the shows.
I made a post about Giada once--how does she eat so much crap on her 'weekend getaways' and not gain an ounce?! there's
something about it on her website--she's a 'grazer' apparently.
oh, and I LOVE sandra lee. she seems to be the healthiest cook of all, and her recipes are always soooo easy.
I've met Anna Olsen and talked to her about how she stays fit. She said when you're around chocolate and sweet smells all day the last thing you want to do is eat it. She also talked about moderation, she likes good food but also exercises regularly.
Also, as an FYI she said she'd never eat Cool Whip and thinks edible oil is just wrong :)
i think the healthiest cook is Ellie Krieger and...I forget...the one who makes the main ingredients over the weekend, and then recycles them throughout the week? she's the one that has the crazy bright eyes...n' Sandra Lee...i don't know..just saw her with those chili cheese fries
I know this topic was brought up a while ago but I was reading Paula Deen's biography and she answered some questions people asked when they meet her. They want to know who eats the food and she said she and her crew eat it on her show but some other hosts spit the food out into a bowl or they purge. I think it's sad they can't enjoy their own creations. Maybe I'm just nosy but I really want to know who it is.
woah, sadly i can see that being true. especially since some slimmer hosts are always making crazy (unhealthy) recipes. i know who i think it (they) are, but i know i dont think its Racheal Ray. she takes several bites of her food at the end, but then again i dont really pay attention to her swallowing. oh well...
Yeah I see some of the stuff It's crazy... A lot of it is SOO UNHEALTHY!! But it looks so good
