Food Obsession

Quote  |  Reply
Since I noticed my over- and unhealthy eating, I find that I spend a lot of time thinking about and obsessing over food. It seems like if I see an unhealthy food and end up not eating it, I spend the rest of the day thinking about that type of food and wanting it. Also, I find that I'll be doing something and my mind keeps wandering back to food and caloric content and fibre and nutritional values of anything and everything. And on days when I obsess over food so much (and trying to reduce my intake of 'bad' foods) I end up overeating. The fact that I am in a food engineering/nutrition program at university is making my food obsession even worse, because I go to class and learn about food, then come home and do homework that is related to food.

Through it all I think I'm getting to a point where I can eat somewhat normally, but I feel like I am going crazy thinking about food so much! I'm sure that other people don't spend about 25-35 minutes of every hour thinking about food (not including when I am doing school work related to food). It doesn't really sound like much, but it's about half of my waking day and it distracts me from other important things in life. Any ideas on how to stop?

Pick a different major?  J/k.

I spend a fair amount of the day thinking about work and/or school even when I'm not actively working on those things.  Our brains need time to digest information  and you have a lot of food information throughout your day.  As long as you're eating right, don't sweat it and relish your deep understanding of foods and nutrition.

On a more serious note, if you really don't like thinking about food and nutrition that much, you might actually want to consider a different major.

I obsess over food too :( and I have no cure, so sorry -- no tips for you. Your definitely not alone though.

I seem to plan everything around when and what to eat. Its like my life revolves around it. And I think about food wayyy too much. It drives me insane

Hopefully someone has some good tips ;)
ok honestly, im in high school (so no food major or food classes) but i have the SAME EXACT PROBLEM.

im SOOOOOOOOOo tired of spending a majority of my time (literally, a majority) thinkiing about food, whether it be what im going to eat for my next meal, or how many calories ive had today, or the different combos i can order at chipotle, or what im going to eat next time i go to bj's with my mommy.

its not like its all particularly thoughts about making healthier choices and calories and sutff, its just in general about FOOD

soooooooo annoying!

but i have been working on it because it leads me to obsessions and i like i have been trying to stop adding up cals since im a teenager and finished recovery a little while ago.and i have been doing pretty good.

everytime a food thought pops up i kinda block it off. i say NOPE i cant listen to this and change my thoughts to something else. it takes a while but soon it will become a habit? and i found that doing this and stopping thinking about food so much has made me eat soooooooooo much less. i even forget to eat and dont get hungry half as often. its crazy. (but of course i eat haha im just saying i have to remind myself)
I think you'll find there are a lot of people who are "obsessed" with food in that sense unfortunatly! ):

unfortunately i have a food obsession too...but i have discovered that listening to music and dancing really drives my mind away from food, I LOVE dancing! maybe you should try it, i know what you are going through, i think about food waaayyy too much, but usually music always makes me feel happy and better overall:)
