I usually weigh my meats after they are cooked and log the grams that way. However, tomorrow my fiance and I are having some friends over for a barbeque and I am not comfortable weighing my meat on the food scale in front of them. If I weigh the meat before hand, will it weigh roughly the same as when it is cooked? What if the meat is frozen? Im assuming that steak weighs more when it is frozen than when it has been grilled on the barbeque, so any idea as to how much more?
I would weigh the meat when it is thawed before your friends get there, and then enter the weight of it raw. I believe meat loses approximately 1 oz of water less when cooked. So, whatever you end up consuming will be a little less due to water loss, which means you will only be overestimating your intake by a bit. I always feel better to do that when I'm in a social situation where I may snack on a bite of something here and there. I find it gives me more "wiggle room" that way and I can just relax about it :)
Also, you can use the following guides to "guesstimate" portions in a social setting. I have found them very useful.

Have fun at your BBQ!! :)
yep- as above.
as long as you are not adding lots of calories in your method of cooking, then get the raw weight. lots of leats are listed on here 'raw' as well as cooked. ![]()
Thanks. I will weigh it raw. I would much rather over estimate on food than under estimate.
