Foods for what ails you (food remedies)
After recommending a nice bowl of garlic potato soup to the latest coworker coming down with the winter plague, I got to thinking, what other foods do folks use as food remedies?
Some the ones I use:
Sour Stomach - orange juice with sprite/7-up/club soda
Cough - honey
Stuffy Nose - sesame chicken, the spicier, the better (and I can't normally stand spicy food)
Sore Throat - lemon juice
Constipation - Liquorice
Upset Stomach - Cola
Motion sickness: Ginger root (I've never tried this because I don't get motion sickness but they tested it on Mythbusters!)
Upset stomach: flat Ginger Ale (look for one with real ginger, not just ginger flavouring)
Sore throat: honey (it's supposed to work but I always just drink lots of hot tea and water)
If I ever have a head cold, my favourite thing to eat is chicken soup with lost of pepper, especially bad-for-me varieties like Campbells condensed soup (with salt & MSG).
Consipation: orange juice and mandarin oranges
Upset stomach- I used to drink ginger ale and take one chicken bouillon cube and dissolve it into hot water. Not the greatest tasting drink, but it works!!
i don't know if it's a legitimate remedy or not, but i love ginger tea. it's supposed to boost immunity and promote healthy digestion. i just love the taste, and love how it makes my house smell.
If I've got a cold I make viciously hot curries with lots of garlic, ginger and chillis. Don't know if it helps the cold but at least you can taste it!! Another cold remedy... stud a lemon slice with cloves, pour over a generous measure of scotch, some ginger wine and add a good slug of boiling hot water... leave to steep and then use to wash down a paracetamol. Kill or cure.
For constipation.... heated up orange juice consumed at night before going to bed. Then lie on the stomach to sleep.
For an upset stomach... hot water poured over a slice of lemon, sipped regularly
Cold: Homemade chicken soup wih lots of broth, & also drink orange juice throughout the day for additional liquids and vitamin C
Sore throat: 1) Tea with honey and lemon 2) Warm milk with 1 tbsp butter + chili pepper or fig
Stuffy Nose: spicy food of any kind
Nausea: Ginger tea, candied ginger
Headache: Cup of supersweet strong coffee (with SUGAR)
Cystitis or Urinary Track Infection: Cranberry Juice (Really WORKS, but only in beginning stages)
And LOTS more that I just can't think of right now.
General ailment: chocolate
TTOM - Ginger root either chewed or a tbsp of powder in some apple sauce. (I took it straight one time and accidentally inhaled it...coughed for an hour. LOL)
Cayene pepper capsule. Those two together cures my cramps everytime.
Anyone got anything for the crabbiness I have felt today though? Can get the cramps but can't quit being a b****.
When I have a migraine I can only handle hot tea. When I'm having sinus problems I crave super hot like Frank'sred hot or chili powder dumped on everything. Chocolate relaxes me when I have arthritic attacks. Also too much sodium makes my ovaries hurt do to my crazy female problems so lots of water helps counteract the sodium during ovary pain.
I read that Peppermint soothes IBS, stomach aches and also, unclogs stuffy noses.
