Foods that keep you feeling fuller....
I always seem to be hungry, even though I eat a lot throughout the day...any suggestions on foods that keep you full for longer? Protein shakes seem to help, but I would love to hear more ideas.

My little fuller feeling fetish is fresh Granny Smith apples. I'f I've got the calories to spare, then I'll add a tablespoon of peanutbutter. Bananas are filling as well.
I find fruit, vegetables, protein and/or fiber-filled foods to be the most satiating. For fruits, I go for: apples, pears, strawberries (chopped up small so it feels like more food) and canteloupe For veggies, i mostly eat carrots, celery and grilled zucchini or squash For protein rich foods, I usually have egg whites, sliced turkey, Fage 0% or cottage cheese My favorite high-fiber foods are by Fiberone (both the bars and the cereal--but not at once!)
I feel that when food is combined, like in a salad, it fills more than just the sum of it's parts.
I think it's the different tastes, so that you are constantly tasting and thus aware of your eating. And the darker green the leaf on salad, the more filling.
I don't know if it's just me, but I find that raw mushrooms are the most incredibly filling food I have come across, for the most ridiculously low amount of calories. Give it a try! I'd be interested to know if it works for you!
If you find that they lack taste, dipping them in hummus makes them more interesting, and it is still a very healthy, filling and low calorie snack.
I have exactly the same problem, the only thing that seems to help me is the concept of 'grazing'.
A local chinese health shop does large plastic bags of different flavoured varities of nuts. I usually always carry one of the bags around with me. This way I never go more than around 10 minutes without popping a delicious honeyed almond or peanut in to my mouth. If I'm out I'll put it into a zip compartment of my handbag and just very slyly slip my hand in and grab a few if I'm tempted by the wares at the bakery I have to pass to get to work.
Also porridge in the morning or for lunch works for me. Bran flakes are pretty damn tasty and fill me up longer than other cereals such as corn flakes or rice crispies. Fruit is your friend ;)
A banana can stave off the 4pm hunger pang until it's time for dinner.
Protein keeps me fullest the longest. I like a huge cucumber sliced up then I dip each piece in a little Hummus. (I buy the Tribe 40 spice Hummus then mix it with a can or 2 of canneli beans and lemon juice in my processor make it a little lower calorie and a whole lot cheaper)
I also like cole slaw mix with a few onces of chicke or fish. I make a " sauce" out of vinager and half a teaspoon of mayo or yorgurt and some sweetener.
This way you get a lot of food. A good amount of protein and still have a low calorie snack or lite meal.
Grapes Grapes Grapes! A lot of times, with something like a banana, that has little water content, and many more calories, you can scarf down the whole thing in no time. With grapes, you have to pick them off the stem and generally eat one at a time, which makes you feel like you've been eating for a long time and you can eat a whole buschel (sp?) of them for less than 100 calories- where as a banana, or mango, or salad with dressing would be more- I lost 18 pounds in a week when I was substituting them in for my post 6pm snack- try it!
- Protein Protein Protein - Grilled Chicken Breast, Grilled Turkey Breast Burgers, Grass-Fed Red Meats, Fish of all Types, Eggs & Egg Whites - You know what I'm talking about! Protein is what keeps me full for a VERY long time! :)
oatmeal! seriously-- it's the only thing that makes me feel ful in the morning (or afternoon haha)
i've come up with some different varieties.. all with quaker oats (the kind in the big cylindrical container) and i put a measuring cup inside to do portion control
1/2 cup oats(dry),with cinnamin, cloves, and vanilla extract. microwave with 1cup water for 2.5 minutes then 1/2 cup of milk on top= about 200 cals
1/3 cup oats (when dry) then add a cooked scrambled egg and some seasoning (i love spike) = 170 ish calories
so good so filling
Cooked spinich and carrots keep me full and actually for quite awhile, with just a pinch a salt:)
Hot and sour soup! It's chock-full of lean proteins that keep you full for ages, and is so bulky is very satisfying to an empty tummy, yet is incredibly low in calories.
I make it with low-sodium chicken broth, 170g cubed medium tofu, 1 can bamboo shoots, 2C broccoli, 4 large mushrooms cut into wedges, 2T cornstarch, 1T soy sauce, a drizzle of sesame oil, 4T rice wine vinegar, 1T chili paste, 2 egg whites swirled in, 2 sliced green onions, and 200g frozen prawns. Makes 4 large servings at about 115 cals each.
Soup is where it's at!!!
Programme on British TV last night, did an experiment with Army Cadets. They were all fed a lunch of Chicken, vegetables and rice with a glass of water. All exactly the same calories.
But half of them were given it liquidised as a soup, they then tested their stomachs after 2 hours and 4 hours to see how full they were.
The non-soup team had significantly emptier stomachs after 2 hours and after 4 hours were completely empty and 'hungry'. The soup-team were still full after 2 hours and not completely empty after 4 hours - but they'd eaten the same things!!
Amazing!
I am finding protein fills me the most. But also chickpeas (garbanzo beans). A few on a salad helps me.
hey , def soup is the way the to go, home made, not shop bought cos it has too much salt etc, so easy to make, really filling one is just - carrots, brocholi, cauliflower, small bit mushy peas, chicken stock, herbs and little milk, yummy!
porridge and bran flakes are great too.
salad with chilli relish is good too.
Fat free yogurt. I always keep some in the office fridge.
Complex carbs are great at keeping you full. Make sure to eat stuff with whole grains. This can include whole grain pasta, brown rice, whole wheat bread, oatmeal, etc.. Vegetables are also great because they don't have a lot of calories and are filling.
Great question! I really enjoyed reading the responses too! Very interesting about the soup keeping you full longer.
I am loving roasted cauliflower right now! Love it! I cut it up and drizzle olive oil and S/P and bake it at 400 for like 20 min and then I take it out and put 2T of light butter and roast for 20 more min. YUM! And it keeps me really full!! Barely any cals too!
Also loving lentils and brown rice (with seasoning, garlic and onion). *Didn't know you had to rinse lentils first tho, so hopefully my next batch will come out even better!
i definitely agree with everyone's suggestions of protein and whole grains, but i also find that adding more fat to my meals/snacks keeps me fuller longer (think nuts, peanut butter, olive oil, etc.)
i think what keeps me feeling full is tomato juice, and if i have a few extra calories i dip toast in it.
SOUP! I make my own vegetable soup and it does wonders!!!
