Which foods are natural diuretics?
Asked by cmb6951 on Feb 11, 2009 in Nutrition

Besides asparagus ,are there other foods or drinks that help with water retention?  I know that you are not supposed to get on the scale daily, but I do it anyway.  It is so discouraging to gain 3 lbs overnight when I have stuck to my calorie allotment.  I know that it is technically impossible to gain 3 lbs, that way but why does my weight fluctuate so much?

Answer

One high sodium meal can result in a 5 pound weight, especially for women and people over age 50.  Natural diuretics do exist, but they are mild.  Besides asparagus, parsley, watercress, celery seed, dandelion, and melon all have diuretic properties.  The herbs are often brewed into a tea, taken 2 or 3 times a day.  A soaking bath also helps to push water from the tissues into the vessels.  But it’s much easier to prevent fluid retention than to flush it out.   Limit sodium to 2300 mg per day and drink lots of water to flush out the system.  Eat fruits and vegetables to balance your intake of potassium and other minerals.
