Are there foods you seriously stock up on?

Quote  |  Reply
Everybody was amused I had almost an entire pantry shelf full of Kraft Handi-Snak SF puddings.  Granted I must have had over a 100 all flavors combined.  Considering theyre 40cal instead of 60-70 (that means almost 2 for the cals of 1 other brand), that I eat 1-2 daily, that I can only find them at one grocery store and that when they go from $1.50 to sale $1, why not pay a third less on as many as I can stock.  Now Im down to about 12 and wondering why havent these been on sale again (... grrrr ...).

Other bulk stocked foods:
COTTAGE CHEESE - perishable but I eat so often, get 2 tall tubs at a time
EGGS - long exp dates and convenient to make
SALMON - again money, on sale I split into snack baggies and freeze
BLACK BEANS - takes care of serious hunger moments
PROGRESSO LITE SOUPS - so low cal, can even be a snack

Kashi golean hot cereal

frozen veggies of all kinds

Almond Breeze

canned pumpkin

pita pockets

quinoa

La Tortilla Factory smart wraps

Fiber One bars

South Beach frozen entrees and pizzas (when on sale)

Not a lot that I stock up on.  I don't usually like pre-packaged foods, so there's not a lot of that in the house.  However, Wal*Mart has a generic brand of Splenda that's 1-2 dollars cheaper on average.  Given that I absolutely loathe my local Wal*Mart (I shudder even to mention its name), I have a tendency to literally run in, grab as many bags of Altern as I can, and run back out after paying.  And I do mean literally, I'm not misusing the word - anything requiring me to go in that horrible, horrible store includes me running down the aisles.

I guess we also stock up on meat, technically - but we buy pork in the half-pig amounts from a local farm, so it's sort of... unavoidable to have the chest freezer full of it.

I suppose we're also technically stocked up on cakes and cookies, but we bought the chest freezer from some of our wedding l00t, and we sunk all the leftover cookies into deep freeze XD

I really stock up on Quaker Weight Control oatmeal when it is on sale, because it rarely is, and i find paying $4 kills me. I eat it every morning for breakfast. I found it recently at target for $2.89 a box and ended up buying like, 5 boxes.

I also will buy the big pack at BJ's Wholesale of the Birdseye steamfresh veggies ( i usually eat this with dinner during the week).

frozen veg and frozen fish.

fresh chilies, ginger, and garlic.

wild/red rice mix, red and green lentils.

rice vinegar, fish sauce, mirin, soy sauce both dark and light.

My husband is convinced i'm runnung an asian restaurant behind his back!

I've learned stocking up on quick eat things can be dangerious.. for example I love chocoalte soya milk.. but I only buy it one carton at a time.. because I will drink it in two days instead of a week and if there is another one well rinse and repeat :)

Beans/lentals canned and dried are always around, baked beans for quick dinner side dishes.

Sweet & spicey tuna snacks great after work pre-run snack

Yogurt minimeals - the kind of with the little pack of granola to mix in perfect for saturday/sunday afternoons or quick breakfast in the car/bus

I always feel a bit guilty for eating those tuna snacks and yogurts though they use so much packaging it's such a waste.

- Canned tomatoes  (Although recently I've had a hate-on for them because I realized how much sodium were in the bloody things - need to find an alternate)

- Oatmeal - Bob's Red Mill is the best!

- Raw Almonds - when on sale I buy a big package!

- Couscous / Quinoa / Lentils / Chickpeas (dry)

- Black Beans / Chickpeas (canned)

- Cottage Cheese Cups (Fat Free - again, until I noticed the sodium - need to find the less salt variety - I'm bummed about it)

- Scallops, Shrimp, Haddock, Salmon and Talapia.

- Whole Wheat Pitas (great for pita pizzas or for sandwiches.

- Weight Watchers or Bodywise Bread, Bagels,  and Hamburger Buns

- Mushrooms, I buy HUGE packages - love em!

- Salsa, Fat Free Sour Cream, and Tzatziki - my favorite spreads!

Genisoy Soy Crisps! A bit pricey, but I buy them when they go on sale or go to Whole Foods for the store brand. I leave with bags of them...

Healthy Pop Kettle Corn-- only 200 cals for the whole big bag, and so delish

South Beach Diet bars in Cinnamon Raisin. On sale or not, I always have them in the pantry.

Packaged salmon. Might sound gross to some, but it's like tuna, only salmon, in a pack! Cheap and easy, about $1.79 for a 3 oz package.

Kashi Go Lean Cereal

Peanut Butter

Apples!!! With PB, sliced, or whole, I love Gala, Fiji, and Pink Lady! (Whatever is cheapest that week!)

My cabinets in my kitchen are packed with =

tomato paste, artichoke hearts, olives, canned tomatoes, anchovies, canned sardines, canned salmon, canned tuna & nori sheets!

My fridge/freezer is stocked with = frozen red meats of all kinds (grass-fed only), salmon steaks, eel, frozen vegetables, ice cubes (flavored like coffee), a big tub of spinach, bell peppers, cherry tomatoes, water, egg whites, canned mushrooms, tea/coffee, eggplants & onions!

**The most of any thing that I have in my kitchen though is cans of tomato paste! I eat that stuff by the can with a spoon!!

I buy LOADS of Progresso soups - they're quick and easy and oh-so-good.  Try the light Southwestern Style Vegetable - it's like a frito/taco salad in a soup bowl!  It's amazing.

And I'm REALLY into the Green Giant frozen veggies.  I love the cheesy broccoli/cauliflower ones.  They're super good mixed with a veggie dog or two, and very filling.

I also load up on Kraft Handi snack puddings! Especially when they are on sale for $1.00

Tuna pouches, healthy life bread (I freeze it, my supermarket only carries it like twice a year), Almond Milk, Veggies burgers in various flavors, pickles, maplegrove farms salad dressings, Simply Steams, Reduced Sugar Ketchup (I am obsessed and for some reason I think their going to discontinue it anyday)
