Is it just me or does it seem that ALOT of people on this site are over sensitive to the whole being fat issue.  Ok I just was reading a post about how "heavier" people where tipping her as a waiter. Any way every one took the post completely out of hand because she made comment that it appeared that obese people tended to tip her less... But Im sure if her post had been about how skinny people tipped her crappy no one would have made a big deal about it.... And MOST people here seem to take offense to the word "fat", yet it is completely ok to call someone skinny, short or tall. I understand this is a weightloss website, But you guys are taking it way to far.  Fat is fact of life. Ok, if your fat, you will at somepoint be called names. Is it right? no, but its going to happen, people with alot of muscle are called meathead or gearheads or knuckle draggers, I could go on forever about different types of bodies and things they get called. My point is, this is life. Come to terms with it... and stop being over sensitive about things, you dont wanna be called fat... its simple lose weight, wanna stop being called a meathead.. stop working out. wanna stop being called a twig start eating..  Im done with my rant.. have at it and call me names, but that makes you no better than you think I am. (that excludes any medical disorders like psychically not being able to do something

It's ok for Akon to use the "N" word a lot in his songs (I just use him as an example, I know there are many others who do it as well), and it seems to be generally tolerated. And just to point out, he is African-American.

I wonder if it would be as well tolerated if Justin Timberland started throwing that word around (he's caucasian, btw).

My point is this- "fat" is usually used in a derogatory manner. It might be alright for "fat" people to call themselves this if they want, but if you yourself are not overweight, use a different word.

This isn't a school playground, most of us are adults and should be able to be talk without name calling.

Haha...

Your mask, Carnival of Venice?

It's not so much about the word as it is about the rather transparent attempt by many posters to open the 'I hate fatties' discussion without saying the words. One sees carefully worded threads, that although they do not violate posting guidelines, are  introduced as a way to marginalize, denigrate or otherwise belittle people of size.

So when I see one of these 'No offense, really, I'm just wondering' threads, I tend to defend the quiet lurkers who may never post but are just as hurt by the broad generalizations and stereotypes fostered by some here.

For myself, I care not one whit, but then I've learned that anyone who allows themselves to be defined by their appearance, is disregarding the most important version of themselves, the workings of their mind.

system, the post you are referring to was posted by someone who actually claimed that she had predjudice towards overweight people because of her ED.

it was just an insensitive, poorly worded thing to post on a board like this, and she had to know it would bother some people.

i mean, if someone went onto a body building website and posted "hey, just wondering why all you muscular guys have tiny dicks?" would the guys there be "overly sensitive" if that pissed them off? i don't think so. i'd think the poster was an idiot for posting something like that in the wrong place, and i'd think those guys would have every right to put them in their place.

...if someone went onto a body building website and posted "hey, just wondering why all you muscular guys have tiny dicks?"

Is it offensive even when it's true?

don't be silly Tom, you know that's only true about guys with giant cars.

What were you and your sister doing when she told you this?

System:

The only reason I have a problem being called FAT is because of the connotations behind it.

Fat is NOT just a descriptive term that means someone has too much body fat in their body.

Fat, in todays world, means:

  • Lazy
  • Slobbish
  • Ugly
  • Greedy
  • Piggy
  • Unhealthy (whether you eat well or not, if you're fat, you're IMMEDIATELY unhealthy, and must eat unhealthy too!)
  • Disgusting
  • Slovenly
  • Etc,.

FAT is not just a word to most people. It describes a lot of things that most people in America (USA) associate with that word.

Don't call me FAT because I don't want those other words associated with me. I am NOT lazy, slobbish, ugly, greedy, piggy, unhealthy, disgusting or slovenly.

I AM FAT, meaning over weight, over ideal body fat percentage.

And I'm working on it. But don't call me fat because in a large % of people's heads, those other words/ideas are conjured up too.
