"What IS That!?!"

Quote  |  Reply

It always surprises me how conservative people are with their food choices! Like how can you live your whole life never trying different things?

Ok, I understand when people wonder what I'm having when they see me pour a glass of Kefir or snack on some quinoa - those are genuinely rare foods in our culture, and its cool that people are curious.

But last week my friend came over and I started making myself a sandwich with avocado. She looked totally disgusted as I spread it on the bread, and asked me what the hell I was eating.

SERIOUSLY!?! Never tried an avocado!?!

There was also one time at work where my supervisor couldn't get over the "weird little candies" I was eating with my lunch - they were chickpeas for god sakes!

Does it ever surprise you how.. unadventurous people are with their food? Or vice versa, are you one of those people who have stuck to meat+potatoes for dinner since childhood, and aren't really interested in trying new things?

When I was in high school (many, many years ago) I made a classic American picnic feast for my boyfriend, including devilled eggs.  He said "I don't like devilled eggs".  I said, "Why not?".  He said "I don't know, I have never eaten a hard boiled egg."  I said, "Why not?".  He said "they are diet food".  I said "trust me, devilled eggs are not diet food!".  BTW, he ended up loving them.

But, yes, I am amazed that people are so unwilling to try some new things.  It would be so boring to eat only meat and potatoes!

Yep I am very suprised also. I'll try anything once. I think there was a thread here about what people thought they didn't like until they tried it. Truely amazing.

Just the other day I was at the supermarket buying a watermelon and the check out lady asked "ummmm what kind of melon is this?"  -- I was SO taken aback!  How can anyone not know what a watermelon is!

i feel very sorry for the poor person who's been denied the wonderfulness of the avocado! yummmm!

I used to bring avocado, hummus and sprouts sandwiches to work as part of my lunch/dinner.

My co-workers thought I was eating grass.

Also, I used to have a supervised mid-morning snack (recovering from ED). My neighboor would come over to eat with me.

I had a yogurt with raisins and almonds. She thought the raisin were chocolates. I mean really. :sigh: Who has never not seen a raisin?

People amaze me.

that sounds absolutely delish! :D

I knew a 30-something person from Iowa who had never tasted Peach ... not fresh, not canned, not artificial flavoring!   She knew about apples, bananas, pears, grapes, and oranges ... but not "exotic fruit"!

At school I was eating cauliflower and some girl asked me what it was. Same with dates, but that's a little more understandable.

Really? Raisins???

Hasn't everyone's mom made them oatmeal raisin cookies at SOME point!?

And more importantly: do these people live in a hole?

I also find it weird when people don't like to eat food from other cultures, and would rather stick with the things they've always eaten. I seriously had a friend who ordered french fries at an indian restaurant (the waiter gave us dirty looks) and refused to try anything else.

Oh well, more tikka misala for me!

I eat the weirdest stuff EVER and people always look at me thinking (and saying out loud if they want) WTF... Example: Last night I went out to sushi and got EEL SASHIMI (effin' delicious!!!!) and well my brother's girlfriend cringed at me and was like huh? I tried to get her to eat a little piece because she doesn't know WHAT she is missing but she totally rebelled! Oh well, more for me! ha ha! But it was kinda odd, why not just try it - it's not like you will die!

Although - she did say: why don't you eat some cake and refused so maybe it's the same thing? Oh I don't know! ha ha!

In the past, my mom/brother/co-workers have commented on the following "weird foods" that I eat:  tofu, canned tuna, cottage cheese, soy milk, lentils, veggie burgers (instead of fatty beef ones).

I eat weird things all the time. The weirdest things are always the most delicious. I love things like frog legs, pigeon eggs, eel sushi, and my all time favorite...cow tongue.

People always assume they won't like something because it sounds "weird". But then again, I'm not a picky eater.

I'd probably enjoy me a dinner made of dog!

(EXAGGERATION! Just trying to make my point that I'm not a picky eater)

I love cow tongue! Boil it for 3-4 hours with some herbs and it goes great on the sandwiches once it cools, or with some rice or something while it is still hot. I think I can eat entire thing in one seating!

Yeah i believe the shark was fermented..they had to eat it and drink something with it..sounded pretty bad!...Puffin is the only thing didn't try...

They actually stayed at farm houses which were cheaper than staying at hotels...

Well hourse meat and shark meat are considered delicacies, and are not every day foods. Of course they will be expensive.
