"What IS That!?!"

Quote  |  Reply

It always surprises me how conservative people are with their food choices! Like how can you live your whole life never trying different things?

Ok, I understand when people wonder what I'm having when they see me pour a glass of Kefir or snack on some quinoa - those are genuinely rare foods in our culture, and its cool that people are curious.

But last week my friend came over and I started making myself a sandwich with avocado. She looked totally disgusted as I spread it on the bread, and asked me what the hell I was eating.

SERIOUSLY!?! Never tried an avocado!?!

There was also one time at work where my supervisor couldn't get over the "weird little candies" I was eating with my lunch - they were chickpeas for god sakes!

Does it ever surprise you how.. unadventurous people are with their food? Or vice versa, are you one of those people who have stuck to meat+potatoes for dinner since childhood, and aren't really interested in trying new things?

Is dog a delicacy in Korea or is it something you always eat?..Just curious..

Well hourse meat and shark meat are considered delicacies, and are not every day foods. Of course they will be expensive.

well gas was 2.50 a liter. a beer was $10. a cd was $32. tshirt $40...i consider that expenisve. alot of that is due to a weak US dollar. iceland was on krona (not euros) i think when i was there a few years ago. dollars to euros is a losing deal...

i would never eat horse or dog intentionally unless i was starving. NO... just NO.

Why not? I had Bishbarmark with horse meat (it was a very special occasion), it was pretty good.

well im not a big meat eater and recently im real picky about where the meat i eat comes from, especially since the whole aporkalypse deal.

i know you cannot get swine flu from eating pork, but i only buy meat from the pig farmer at the farmers market now instead of pork from a CAFO.

so lets just say i have meat issues and leave it at that lol

My best friend thinks the food my family and I eat is totally weird and disgusting. For example: avocadoes, squash, chick peas, eggplant, cottage cheese, shrimp, salmon etc. All she ever eats is chicken fingers, KD, canned soup, tacos, grilled cheese, spaghetti and Hamburger Helper. She's never eaten fish in her life and she'd never had a bagel until she ate one at my house. Also at the grocery store I go to the cashiers have no idea about the produce when they have to type in the codes. Once I bought some ginger and the girl asked me if it was a potato.

I was eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and my boss asked me: What on earth are you eating? After telling him he pulled a face and said, oh no he'd never be able to eat THAT... after a couple of minutes he admitted that he'd never in his whole life had peanut butter.... how is that possible? Almost 40 and never had peanut butter... ?!

I LOVE peanut butter!!!!

My best friend grew up in central Pennsylvania, and didn't know half the foods I eat.  However, she is one adventurous gal, and has tried just about everything I suggest and loves it.  She embraced everything from artichokes to zucchini and learned to cook it all.  She even taught herself how to make fresh pasta.  She's a joy to cook for, and to share a meal with.

Her boyfriend eats only a few foods.  His dinners are chicken or ham with baked macaroni or mashed potatoes and either peas or corn. He will only eat canned fruit in syrup or a banana because he says fresh fruit is sour.  Seriously, that's it.  For lunch he has a ham and cheese sandwich on white bread with Miracle whip every single day.  If he was served something in childhood that he didn't like, he still won't eat it and makes faces.  The man is in his 60s for pete's sake.  It drives her nuts.

I'd probably enjoy me a dinner made of dog!

Then come over to Korea for some dog soup.

YES YOU MAKE DREAMS COME TRUE

This actually made me think.

I consider myself an "adventurous eater", and deffinitely not picky, because I love to try foods of different cultures, and new foods in general.

But good lord, I would NEVER eat horse. Or dog. I actually think I would be sick if I had to. (Not trying to offend anyone who does enjoy a good... hearty... horse steak. ughhh).

But what is picky, then? People who won't try an avocado because it's "squishy" or people who won't eat animal products that they don't readily associate with food? Because I don't even understand eating Calamari. It's octupus! Common!

Ok, this might even be worse than the guy who hadn't heard of raisins.

PEANUT BUTTER!?

Peanut Butter WAS my childhood.

thats like over here they prefer vegemite over PB! its insane but in a way when it comes to trying new foods i  love how Australia is just so multicultural there is a massive variety of foods and cultures to explore in this big land. myself i was a bit picky with asian cuisine esp noodles and stuff but now i looooove them esp chow mein. its not good to be picky cos you never know how foods can change your life...i <3 my PB forever..hehe..Tongue out

It's something Koreans ate back in the day when there wasn't enough food. Nowadays most people don't eat it. However, there is a boshintang (dog meat soup) restaurant near my apartment. I've never eaten it but I know some foreigners here who've tried it just to say they've done it. No one has been impressed. When I ask my students about it, most of them and their parents have never eaten it before and have no desire to.

Here in America we treat our dogs like children..so if we ate a dog, it would be like eating one of our kids..(sounds weird)Undecided

Well, I wouldn't eat the PET dog, any more than I would eat a PET pig.  But if the dog was raised as a food animal, I'd love to try it.  I love all kinds of food and will try anything once, though I wouldn't eat an "endangered" animal.  I have heard of a "mythical" Chinese "7-Snake Soup" that would be my ultimate goal in gourmandization.   &nb sp;

You can have pet pigs, cows and chickens in the US too. =P

I've never eaten an avocado or chickpeas. And a bunch of other things people mentioned, it's not because I live in a hole, it's just because I just never had it.

I've eaten pig ears (gross...) though! Portuguese foods are pretty nasty anyway. Soup with bird intestine... or soup with chicken feet (they look like little alien hands!). So uh, yeah. :x
