Weight Gain

Just a quick question, if anyone would be willing to offer their help/advice:

I know this site advocates 2500+ calories a day to gain, and I have read other posts from others asking why they should increase to 2500 when they're gaining on 2000.  I just want to clarify, once your body adapts and your metabolism stabilizes, you will be able to maintain while eating more calories if you gained on 2500, than you will be able to maintain on if you gained on eating 2000?  I hope that was clear!

Also, how fast did you gain?  For those of you who went to 2500, how long did it take you to gain, say, 10 pounds?  I am assuming the "increase your daily intake by 500 calories to gain a pound a week" will not apply in my case, assuming my body is still repairing.

I hope this was clear!  Thanks, all!

Everyone is different and it depends on what you're starting from before you make the increase.

Regardless of what anyone says though, you need to make the increase for you and your body will respond however it chooses.

I gained quite slowly actually which probably wasn't the best idea...I should have bumped it to 3000 calories because I had so much to gain.

Starting to eat 2500 a day was probably the scariest thing I ever did because you just don't know what is going to happen for sure with your weight.

I gained quickly at first as in three pounds of so a week + but last week after a month or so of 2500 I only gained 0.7 of a lb.

It really is trial and error, everyone is different as chrissy said, you have to try it out and give your body time to adjust to those calories.

Maintaining is actually a very different ball game whether you are going from gaining to maintaining or losing to maintaining.

When gaining weight, it's usually recommended that the person be as sedentary as possible (no exercise). That means that 2000 calories will be enough for some women (if they are just sitting in a chair all day long) to gain a bit of weight. The reason that 2500 is recommended is that it gives you a good clear margin of more energy going in than is being used by your sedentary body and so you can absolutely gain weight.

Once you hit a goal weight, then you enter a whole new phase. At that time, maybe you are strong enough to walk and take up activities you've been missing. It could even be that you could maintain that goal weight eating more than 2500 a day depending on your activities and lifestyle. It becomes a whole new adventure and won't really be based on whether you were able to gain on 2000 or 2500.
