Your body is constantly storing and using up fat.  It's also constantly retaining and losing fluids....  So it would be nice to think that if you eat 3500 cals more than you need on Monday it would appear *ping* on the scales by Wednesday.  But quite often the increase in fat is offset by a decrease in fluids or vice versa.

All calories are the same the way that all kilogrammes are the same and all metres are the same. i.e. they are unit of measurement.   But 'foods' have different effects on the body beyond sheer 'calories' and 'alcohol' is absolutely not 'food'.

Good answer! So when do you think is the best time to weigh? I know they say once a week first thing in the morning but if what you just said above is true how do i really know when I'm losing and/or gaining fat? I guess I could put the scale in the closet and just measure once a week, but wouldn't the same rule apply as for water? What do you think?

I weigh myself every morning, and just look at the trend line - the individual weigh-ins aren't important, just the overall direction of weight loss.

Re when to weigh, I weigh myself every morning after the bathroom before but before breakfast. Log it on the weight log and watch the trend line. You may find there are wide differences between days due to fluid retention, etc. (I have had differences up to 2kg on subsequent days), the trend line will tend to smooth them out. Some people go for once a week and thats OK, but I would say look at the pattern over a few weigh ins.

Yeah, well I've really been trying for the last two weeks but I'm flucutating up to 5 lbs in a days time. It was great when I saw it go down by that much but today it's up by that much. IDK, but I thought I'd give it some more more time, drink lots of water & restrain from salt.

I'd say to record your weight only once a week even if you step on the scales at other times...  Over the course of one or two weeks you can see if your body-weight is significantly different.  Over the course of one or two months you can tell if that change is permanent.  Time of day doesn't really matter but most people, for vanity reasons, will weigh in the morning when they are likely to be lightest.
