I will eat meat but won't let anyone buy it for me.  I'm not rejecting meat because of creulty to animals but instead because of the envronmental effects meat production has on the planet.  If mom has extra meat i might nibble on some, but like i said, i won't support meat companies by buying anything.

is there a term for this?

Hmmm...I would say you're en route to vegetarianism. I think that if you're wanting not to support the meat industry then eating what your mum buys is still doing so since technically, okay - i'm about to get real technical and pedantic on this point (try to forgive me, I'm an engineer!), so technically...when you eat a piece of what your mum's cooked then there's that much less meat in the house and she then has to buy more meat that much sooner! Its really quite overly exaggerated but all i'm saying is save yourself the trouble of wondering whether you're a vegetarian or not and just become vegetarian...otherwise you're not vegetarian...you're just a normal person who has meat very sporadically!...I'm a vegetarian. If you like the taste of meat (am assuming you do since you sometimes pick at meat), you would know that there are some great tvp products on the market which taste exactly like meat.

Just some randomness, hope that makes sense!
hehe...good advice.  I was just wondering.  thanks for the response though.  mmm.  i'll be sacrificing lemon-lime chicken but i think the planet is worth it.

:)
I have similar habits ... I don't eat meat at home but I'll eat it on occasion if it's served to me.  IOW, generally vegetarian but will eat meat as a matter of social convenience.  One word that's developed to distinguish this kind of diet from strict vegetarianism is flexitarian.

I'm glad you care about the enormous impacts a meat-heavy diet has on the environment!

I feel that you dont need to be labeled as anything. I dont call my meat eating friends carnivores. I get bothered when people try to label peoples eating habits, ya know? Vegan, Vegetarian, etc etc. It's like if a vegan eats a piece of cheese one day, will the tomorrow now say they are vegetarian. I dont think it matters what you are, and all that matters is you are doing something that is important to you, whatever it is named. How about shiguresflowersism {#emotions_dlg.wink}

I think any name you would give to that lifestyle would not originate from your dietary habits, but your eco-friendly agenda.  I am not sure if there is a name for that though!

or is that too long of a label? Smile

Omnivore.

Or you can call yourself a Flexitarian. There are so many labels out there if you want one.

Why does everyone want to be labeled something? Is it the cool new trendy thing?

I think it is a subconscious need placed on the way society is set up. Everyone trying to fit in somewhere. Maybe labels give a sense of belonging to something. It is not the right way, but unfortunately the common way.

I guess I'm just tired of the "I'm vegetarian but I eat chicken 5 times a week" posts.

That why I answered the way I did initially. Just do what you do and dont label your eating habits. We dont label our shampoo preference habits, or our tv watching preference, etc etc. Why do we need a label based upon what we put in our mouth.

My other theory is that we are more removed from our food than ever in history, so its some sort of compensation. And I don't mean that in a bad way, but we used to have more of a direct relationship with food. Well unless you were the queen of England.
