how can this be?

My doctor used Nutritiondata.com to figure out what I burn therefor what I need to eat a day.

Here is an estimate of your daily energy needs...

Calories Burned Daily Energy Expenditure:  2419 kcal ( 10128 kJ) Additional Calories from Exercise:  + 864.0 kcal ( 3617 kJ)     Estimated Energy Requirement:  3283.0 kcal ( 13745 kJ)

He says I need to eat at least 2200 calories a day and that should produce a weight loss of about 2lbs a week (give or take a little)

Is his thinking correct because I eat 1400-1600 a day now and I have not been able to get below 183 (stuck at 183 for almost a month now).

This just doesn't seem right ????

What is your height, weight, sex? Also what does the Tools here say? Doesn't sound too unreasonable to me - maybe a bit high - but without knowing your stats it's difficult to say.

Listen to your doctor.  :-) Often if your food intake is too low you can experience a plateau in your weight-loss because your body starts to conserve rather than expend energy.  To kick start things, try having a day where you consume your maintenance level i.e. 3000+ cals.  Then you could go to 2200 - 2500 and expect to lose 1.5lbs-2lbs a week average.  That assumes you do 800 cals+ exercise every day, of course.  Best of luck.

Since you're burning 3283 on days you exercise and want to create a 1000 calorie deficit to lose 2lbs a week: 3282 - 1000 = ~2200 calories

on days you don't exercise 2419 - 1000 = ~1400 calories

Doctor sounds about right.

I am 183lbs 31 years old  5'4"

I exercise everyday - sometimes twice if I can fit it in with my parents.

I'm just scared to increase from my norm to 2200 ???

That website says that a healthy BMR is 18.5 - 24... according to that site I am at a healthy weight (5'2 125lbs) but JUST BARELY... that I should be at 105 to be ideal... i have never heard that low a number for me before.. When i was in High school I was 115 and my Mom took me to the doctor because she thought I was anorexic... (I ate constantly, but was very active)...

I think you do need to listen to your doctor, but I also think that site is odd

You need to realize as you lose weight, you'll need to cut calories (slowly and not sharply).  You burn a lot more calories at 183lbs than you would once you reached 150 or so.

well yes the doctor makes sense..

You eat way to little calories for u..which puts ur body into 'starvation mode'..google it! :)

so ur body thinks u r starving..and starts freaking out and holding on to any food u eat...so ur metabolism slows down to make sure u dont rlly starve to death..hence u r not losing any weight..

Now if you go up to 2200 cals/day..You'll put on a lil weight at first..cuz it'll take a bit for ur body to get used to it and for ur metabolism to start going faster..so don't weigh urself for a couple of weeks after u go up to 2200..

So, you go up to 2200, ur body goes up to normal metabolism..it burns it all and burns some more stuff that u already have on for those 1000 cals left..and u lose weight!

try it and see :)
