We just updated the Recipe Analyzer. The major innovation is the ability to use custom foods as ingredients.

We also tried to simplify the process of correcting unrecognized ingredients (try to mistype the serving size or ingredient name to see how we handle those cases).

It's clear to us that we still have to work on the following issues below, which will be corrected over the next couple of days:

  • Ingredients will link to their nutrition label pages
  • Easier process of linking recognized ingredients to a different food item
  • Better print layout

Please let us know if you have any other suggestions or feedback.

Yeah... too bad, too, because beans really are a wonderful fruit.  They're just not *that* wonderful.

Ok, having a really weird problem with errors, but I have absolutely no idea how to attach the screenshots of what I'm seeing.  Basically there's a problem with this recipe my husband has just created, and it won't let me add it to my log, won't let me save it to my favorites, it's just one big ERROR.

Now I'm having yet another weird issue with a recipe I've been using and changing the serving size has *never* made it do this stuff.

Normal serving is 187cals, when I enter .5 into the serving box (which I've been doing all week with all recipes/foods as my portion size relates to what's listed) instead of cutting 187 in half, it gives me a result of 0.4 calories.

This recipe, when I look at it as the recipe I input gives me 237 calories per serving!

http://caloriecount.about.com/cc/useritem/214 323313.html?size_grams=234.5

BOTH ways I look at the recipe, if I try to cut the serving portion down the calorie numbers go completely whonky.

When you log a recipe, it saves it as a custom food. Our system currently doesn't allow you to log others' custom foods, but you can view the original recipe, http://caloriecount.about.com/daves-strawberr y-banana-protein-shake-recipe-r580114 and you should be able to log that.

I tried again, and it analyzes the recipe perfectly until I click to save it.   Then all the ingredients are listed one after another as one long sentence (instead of in column form as before) and the only thing it is analyzing is what happens to be the first ingredient.   So my gluten free pancakes came up as 25 calories each which is just what is what 1/11th of a serving of the brown rice flour is.... when I go to "edit" the recipe, all the correct ingredients are there and it analyzes it perfectly... until I click save recipe.   Then it goes back to just analyzing the first ingredient.

I'm really not trying to be difficult!  I hope I'm not just making some dumb mistake!  But I've never had trouble before...

I was able to save that recipe correctly, it could be a browser issue, can you let me know what browser and operating system you're using?

I will try it again - thank you!   (I am on Windows XP)

Oh my goodness this is so frustrating!! It reads a bunch of items together and I cannot separate them to save my life.  For example

1 cup raspberries

1 cup sugar

becomes ERROR 1 cup raspberries1 cup sugar

It takes forever to enter a recipe now.  Please fix it!

Yesterday I was not only not able to log it, I couldn't tag it, nor could I save it as a favorite.  We'll see what happens today.

Are you interested in the screen shots at all?

Linux, Fedora, can't remember which kernel but it was updated as of last year, Firefox 3.6.4.

I had the same problem with olive oil.  1 Tablespoon showed as only having 64 calories.  I gave up and posted the recipes at dailyplate.com instead.

Man..!  Why can't I?  I kept getting errors.  It's so tasty, too.

Hey, Igor—like others, I'm having problems, but they're hard to explain:

(Mac OS 10.6.7; Safari 5.0.4)

1. Cutting & Pasting removes spaces

I cut and pasted a recipe from CooksCountry.com that contained normal spaces and carriage returns. When pasted into the Recipe Analyzer it looks fine; when "analyzed" it stripped all spaces between the quantity and item and the carriage return. Looking at the source, it appears to be in a table, so maybe you're not handling that correctly.

It gets very tedious to add back in all these spaces for each recipe I enter. I would think this would be a common use case: user copies text from another site and pastes into analyzer.

Source code:

1/4 cup  mashed banana  (see note)

Output:

all-purpose flour 1/2teaspoon baking soda 8tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened 2ounces cream cheese , softened1/2cup packed light brown sugar 1/2cup granulated sugar 1/2cup chunky peanut butter 1/4cup mashed banana (see note)1large egg 2teaspoons vanilla extract 1/2cup semisweet chocolate chips 1/2cup dried banana chips , chopped

2. Edit button covered by entered text error

In the above scenario, once I've pasted and submitted my text, the site returns a light red error box with all the text smashed together. The text needs to be edited, but the red box covers up the edit button (pencil icon). The first few times I did this I couldn't figure out how to correct my error; I then saw the edit text link below.

Could be a browser issue.

3. Recovering from errors is difficult

I entered "1/2 cup packed light brown sugar "; this got smashed into "1/2cup packed light brown sugar", which I had to correct by adding the space after 1/2. The system didn't recognize this item, but there's no error message, just the red box.

It allowed me to search for an item, I chose "light brown sugar" (I think it's item 137089) and then it highlighted the quantity field. I clicked on that and a modal window appeared that said "Custom Size" with grams being shown and the predefined size (4g) below---WHAAAT?

I then entered 1/2 Cup and it now listed the item as "(1/2 cup g) Light Brown Sugar". I then converted my 1/2 Cup into grams (it's 99 grams)--do I enter 99g or 99? Or is it based on a 4g serving so I should put in 25g or just 25? It just kept adding the new amount to the previous text, so I'd get things like "(25 g) (1/2 cup g) Light Brown Sugar".

Way too confusing. Get an IA on this design, stat! :-)

Can you provide a link to the recipe you were using on CooksCountry

Linux, Fedora, can't remember which kernel but it was updated as of last year, Firefox 3.6.4.

The logging of a recipe/favoriting a recipe has not changed in the last month. What did change is the analyzing of a recipe, but is unrelated to the issue you are having.

To help us fix this, can you click on Firefox's tools menu, then click on Error Console, click on clear. Then back on the recipe page, click on Add to Log. Please paste in what error you are now seeing in the Error Console if one exists.

I used to love using your recipe analyzer because it was pretty much just a copy & paste of my recipe, I didn't have to individually add each ingredient. However, this new version is absolutely horrible.

1) You can't go back and edit your ingredient list. So if I add "frozen gnocchi", it might only recognize one brand name item, whereas if I just input "gnocchi" I have a much larger list to choose from. I have to start all over again and change the ingredient list instead of just a simple backspace.

2) I can't get the sizing to work. I used 16 ounces of gnocchi in my recipe, which of course, I had to choose one off your list. Then it didn't recognize 16 ounces somehow. So I had to click on the "ounces", which gave me a pop up box saying "custom size" and "g" was in the box. No matter what I typed, it would always be "cup g", "g g", "ounce g". Even when I went back and changed the ingredient list to grams from ounces, it STILL did the same thing. I even tried using cups as that matched the serving size of the gnocchi I chose on the list. Still same issue. Super frustrating, especially since all I had to do before was just change the measurement to something the analyzer recognized.

Please go back to the old version, or at least give us the option to use the old one.

Alright, be back with the information momentarily.

For whatever reason I cannot convey to you what I'm seeing.  But, it exists.  Tell me how to get this information to you, screenshots, error log (it's all in Java/html/whatever code and the site will *not* display it).  I see no way to post pictures except to upload into my gallery.  How do we do this, communicate between all of us?

MANY errors are being generated.  I have multiple tabs/pages/windows open, I can filter out CC's errors if you give me all urls to filter for.  I'm sure I'm also seeing advert errors on the list here, but I'm also seeing errors specific to the recipe that *I* still cannot log or save as a favorite.  I no longer use the old recipe and cannot edit it, either.

Thanks, this is an issue with tables and will be fixed shortly.

Have the recipe page open, then clear the errors in the error console, then immediately click on "add to log", and you should see one or two errors in the error console now.

Allergy Remedies
Is It Possible to Go Natural?
The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
