Calorie Count
Moderators: Igor, popthestack

We just updated the Recipe Analyzer. The major innovation is the ability to use custom foods as ingredients.

We also tried to simplify the process of correcting unrecognized ingredients (try to mistype the serving size or ingredient name to see how we handle those cases).

It's clear to us that we still have to work on the following issues below, which will be corrected over the next couple of days:

  • Ingredients will link to their nutrition label pages
  • Easier process of linking recognized ingredients to a different food item
  • Better print layout

Please let us know if you have any other suggestions or feedback.

First of all thanks for your free tools, and for trying to improve your system.

Just a few notes about the analyzer:

1- It's VERY convenient to just enter ingredients and create a recipe from there, so we don't have to search food by food.

2- Custom quantities not working for me. I.e first ingredient: olive oil. If I select a predefined measure (1 tbsp) it counts ok. If I try to enter a custom one, the item remains red, and no calories or nutrition values are inserted.

Please fix!

Changes that need to be made for a better user interface/experience for Recipe Builder (may apply to Meal Builder too):

  • When editing a recipe, searching the food database should be an option when adding ingredients that were missed. Right now, user has to manually put it in and it makes for a less accurate calculation because there is a code to go with each item (and I'm guessing the code links to the nutritional info). User won't normally know the code unless they're more tech savvy and make a new tab to find the item in the database then take the code in the url of the item's page.
  • Beside the code, the item amount (cup, gr, oz, etc) dropdown should show up when editing an item in the recipe. This could be done by making the item in the recipe editor a link that links to its page so user can easily edit the amount of that item.
  • It is stated not to put numbers in the instruction part of making a recipe because the site will automatically do it upon submission, but the paragraphs don't get numbered at all after hitting save.
  • There should be a clear button to clear all ingredients when making a recipe when user wants to start over.

How do I edit a recipe I just saved? When I go to add a new item, it only allows me to add a customized item, not one on the list. Only when I add an item incorrectly do I get the option to add from this site's list. Also, when I do add the item, the calorie count is not correct even though I entered the serving correctly. Please tell me how to fix it. This is so frustrating.

Hi.

I am brand new here. I am hoping to learn how to get all the nutrients I need for my active lifestyle. I entered the recipe below into the analyzer and was surprised by the results. High fat, relatively low protein and fiber.... I may be wrong, but I think it results should be opposite. What am I doing wrong?

P.S. I did edit it from the copy and paste I did here. I had no problem with unrecognized ingredients or measurement adjustments.

1 small onion, diced small
1 cup celery, diced small (use celery leaves too if available)
2 tsp. olive oi
1 T ground cumin
1 T chile powder
1 tsp. celery seed
1 tsp. garlic powder or garlic puree
4 cups homemade chicken stock (or 2 cans chicken broth)
1 can vegetable broth
1 can petite diced tomatoes
1 cup salsa (I used Pace Picante Sauce)
6-8 drops Green Tabasco Sauce or your favorite hot sauce (taste to see if you want this)
1 or 2 cans black beans (not drained unless you choose to rinse the beans to reduce the amount of sodium)
2 cups cooked chicken, cut in very small pieces (leftover rotisserie chicken is great for this)
1 cup chopped cilantro leaves and stems (chop the stems very small), plus more for serving if desired
3 T fresh lime juice

Ok.... so when I left the recipe in the above format and didn't edit it at all the analyzer seemed to spit out more accurate results.

I have used your recipe analyzer several times and find it to be a very cumbersome program.  Changing anything for whatever reason almost means you have to start over again.  If you forget an ingredient or need to change servings why do you have to rekey all the directions and descriptions.  Gotta be a better way.

I love the recipe analyzer. It would be very helpful though,if the nutritional informtion could also be reported in ounces, or cups for serving size. I have no idea how many ounces 493 grams are equal to for example. Perhaps the program could provide a choice for measurment systems. In the US we use metrics.

Hi, just tried out your recipe analyzer, it is an excellent addition to an excellent programme. It works for me!

So far, I get a message that I put in an invalid recipe.  But there is not indication as to why it is invalid.  Noting calories in and calories out is a very useful, but tedious work.  It doesn't need this added problem.

Ok, so I decided to type in an existing recipe to see if I could lighten it up somehow. Recipe is Toasted Almond Pound Cake (yeah, go ahead and laugh that I want to lighten up pound cake, I'll wait!), on page 82 of Gold Medal digest magazine No. 13, Shortcakes Pies & Chilly Desserts. Original recipe states 1 serving (of 16) having 435 calories and 21g fat. Calorie Count says 371 calories and 19g fat. That's a pretty large discrepancy!

Ingredients:

2 cups sugar
1 1/4 cups margarine
5 eggs
3 cups all-purpose flour
2 tsp. ground cinnamon
1 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
1 cup milk
1 cup chopped blanched almonds

Is there another way to measure the portion sizes from grams to ounces? Or grams to cups? I don't know how to measure grams....Weight scales don't help either.

Have you tried the Unit Converter at http://caloriecount.about.com/cc/units.php ?

I seem to remember being able to analyze a recipe and then save it. But today I'm trying to do that and don't see that as an option anymore. Frown

I've been having a similar problem.  When I clicked on the hyperlink for the lower calorie count, it took me to green beans, almost always *sigh*.  The bigger calorie count is generally the dry bean.  What I couldn't work out was how to get the cooked beans into my recipe but a hint from this thread solved the problem.

Open up the food you want in your recipe - in my case, it was cooked great northern beans.  Select the serving size you want - I wanted cups.  Now look in the URL and you will see:

calories-beans-great-northern-mature-seeds-i1 6025?size_grams=177

The number you want, in this case, is 16025.  Paste/type that number inside brackets (the square ones - but I don't know if it matters) into your recipe.  For my recipe, it was:

2 cups great northern beans, cooked [16025]

Presto!  The calorie count now reflects the bean I wanted AND only the cooked version of that bean.

The only constructive comment ---look at all your feedback!!!Hint..... there are a lot of features on this site that have not been sucessfully debugged prior to their release. Its irritating to use features that at times take forever to process correctly or even at all. After reading some of the comments, I know im not alone here. Personally I hate wasting my time when logging as I have better things to do!

May I suggest that u beta with a small group (development cycle) prior releasing... as per software lifecycle protocol...

tried to enter a recipe.  This feature used to work easily for me.

Today I keep getting an error with no option to chose/select or change whatever is causing it.

Just entered a complete recipe. It located ingredients pretty easily, and completed an analysis, but when I attempted to save the data, I got "must designate a save location.  So at this point I'm not sure if my recipe will be there or not when I try to find it again.

The recipe analyzer... The edit section makes it awful!!!! EVERYTIME I go to edit a recipe it resets allllll my foods to 1(one) and then the calorie count is off. If you go to analyse it your only option to edit from there is in grams not as in original entry.

After all the feedback the analyzer still won't work.  Guess Free means no service?

Yell

I'm sorta making it work for the main ingredients - but Sodium is all screwy. I added two stock cubes to a recipe by mistake, then corrected it to one cube and the sodium per serving went UP. Every attempt to correct this has made the problem worse, or (at best) perpetuated the wrong information. I've tried both old and new analyzers and it's STILL screwy.
