Is there a way to turn off that red `notifications`number?

Its just annoying,  and often doesn`t work.  As in,  I`ll click it,  but 2 seconds later its red again,  and its still all the old notifications I`ve already checked.

I really don`t care who has commented on someone`s comment on someone else`s comment.
