Adult Tumbling Classes
Hi everyone! I am student teaching this semester, and one of the many first days of school papers to go home with the kids was a paper advertising the local gymnastics place. On the bottom, it said ages 12months to 22 years. I am 21, and I was so excited to read that. Then I started having doubts. All I could think about was how fat I am and how there is no way in h*ll I could go and be ok with it and not make a complete fool of myself. However, it has been my dream since I was a kid to try gymnastics. I never could because my Mom didn't really have the money and there wasn't anywhere near us to do it. My step mom was the captain of the UofA gymnastics team when she was in college, so naturally my little sisters are involved in gymnastics and to be honest I get jealous that they get to try and I will never get the chance. Eventually I convinced myself to give them a call. Why don't I deserve the chance to try something new? Well I called and explained my situation (overweight, no experience, out of shape) and they said there is an adult tumbling class for all levels. So next Monday I am going to go to a class and try it out. I am really excited and nervous. I was wondering if anyone else has been in a similar situation and could tell me about their experience. Thanks!
I completely know how you feel! My family was always too poor for me to ever do gymnastics when I was younger. Then when I was 15, I decided to try it and ended up in a class full of 5-8 year olds which was enough to make me quit after the first class (plus I was pretty chubby, making the situation even more embarrassing). Now that I'm 18, I'm not that in to it anymore but there are lots of times when I think about how fun it would be to know how to do backflips, tucks, etc. So I don't know, I may look into it in the future. But I do know of many gyms offering adult gymnastics/tumbling programs so you're definitely not alone. Plus it's a great workout :)
Good luck with the tumbling class! Definitely post your progress, might inspire some of us to consider it ![]()
clown school? cool!!
Who said anything about clown school? That was random...
Thanks xsara, I will keep you posted. I dont go until next monday, in one week, but I will let you know! :)
Do it Do it Do it .... i can't find a gymnastic class anywhere near me, i'd love one ![]()
best of luck X
good for you! i admire your courage girl! good luck!
my daughter used to compete gymnastics then switched to tumbling. now she coaches, and i judge. tumbing is much more fun and less serious than gymnastics... lower burnout rate.
i won the parents handstand contest one year when they were killing time and crunching scores. i still have my medal. so proud of myself!
let us know when you nail your standing back tuck! ![]()
oh hey! i just remembered...i saw a 35yo woman competing at usag nationals 3 years ago. all events (tumbling, trampoline and double-mini trampoline). how freakin awesome is that?
Watergirl- 2008 Olympics there was a women in her 30's (from Germany) that took third on vault... pretty amazing IMOP

LOL, Just so you guys know I have never even been able to do a cartwheel! In my entire life! Though I can still do the ehad stand I learned in 2nd grade. :)
Awesome! Sports are a skill that you can pick up by applying yourself, so don't feel intimidated, we all stink at first and we're all out of shape at first. They'll probably have a lot of body weight exercises for you to do to help build your muscles and get you started.
I do martial arts which has some aspects of tumbling and I can assure you that you can start at any weight and skill level, particularly if your goal is to have fun and learn a new skill.
That is so awesome! I'm so glad you're fulfilling a dream! I'm in a similar situation. I took ballet for 1 year when I was 8-9 yrs old, but quit. In high school I really wanted to take again, but there weren't any beginner classes for my age. However, when I went to college, I got to take it as a PE class and have been taking ever since. Last year I took an adult class at a dance studio, but this coming year I'll be in a class with younger girls (like half my age!! LOL!- I'm 24, most of them will be around 12. Luckily, there will be 2 other older girls, but still they're like 15-16). I am hoping to make the dance studio's Company as well! I'm keeping my fingers crossed! I've always wanted to be the "prima ballerina"...lol! I'm such a 6 yr old! LOL! But, kudos on going after what you want despite fears! That is awesome! Good luck with everything and have FUN! :-)
