Some advice on shoes please

Hi,

I'm hoping someone could give me some advice on shoes for the gym.  I have been to a proper shop & got them to do the gait thing & suggest shoes & I have asics, but I'm having a few issues.

I was at the gym today (back after a long period off due to illness) & after doing 25 mins walking on treadmill my feet were killing me, they were really sore on the edges of my soles (if that makes any sense) around the middle of my foot.

I'm thinking that this isn't right but is this a shoe problem which means I need to get a new pair in which case is there anything I should be looking out for, or is it just a getting back into working out issue.

I would suggest paying a few extra bucks and going to a shoe store or sporting goods store where people there can offer some "expert" advice on the best shoe for your feet and fitness needs. Once you find the shoes that your feet like, you can then buy how ever many pairs you need until that model is dropped.

It's often more tempting to go to discount stores or places that offer shoe "deals" but who don't have staff to help us make decisions that would be best for out foot health.

I have been fortunate in that I came across a perfect pair of shoes for my walking needs -- New Balance 609 Cross Trainers.  I have bought 10 pairs of them the last three years (and just now ordered 2 new pairs at a $40 savings and free shipping.)

If you're just starting back with walking, anything more than 15-20 minutes per workout the first week or 2 is asking for overuse injuries.  Just a thought. 

 

How old are the shoes?  It could be that you need new ones, it could be that you wore different socks that affected how your shoes fit.  Have you gained/lost weight that might affect the fit of the shoe?  If this was this at the end of the day, what shoes were you wearing all day?

If these are new shoes, then maybe it's the wrong style for you.  Sometimes there is a break in period.

Sounds like normal soreness from being away for a while. Give your feet and legs a while to get used to being used again. 20-30 min on the treadmill is a good start; try increasing by 5 min per week. When you can walk comfortably for 45 min at a clip, try increasing incline or pace.

If you still have foot pain after a month, you might need new shoes (or maybe a larger size, or tie them looser). But what you described sounds like muscular soreness, and the only way to fix that is to use your muscles for their intended purpose.

The 'experts' at the shoe store are guessing.  Podiatrists don't even know what the best fit for you is.

Thank you for all your advice. In terms of the type of pain it wasn't really a muscle pain (my legs were defintiely suffering though Wink) more like the pain you feel when you have a blister which you press, although I don't have any blisters.

 

I appreciate the advice about not doing too much, I have been taking care not to push myself too hard too quickly as I know if I do I'll end up stopping cos I hurt too much.  Although I did 25 mins, 5 was warm up at 4.2 kmph & then I built up to the last 5 mins at 5 kmph so I wasn't pushing myself too hard.

 

I am wondering if the shoes are too tight or too narrow for me, but they feel fine until I start walking quicker.

This is your problem. As soon as you said I was like YEP thats it.  The foot swells/flatens as you walk pushing its space outward. You probably need a 4E wide (that's what I have to wear)

I'm a very experienced walker, and your description sounds really typical of what beginner walkers usually encounter when they start to take walking seriously (rather than a specific shoe problem). On the other hand, I encourage plenty of experimentation as far as shoes go, and it is always good to keep two or three pairs in a rotation anyway. It is healthier, makes your shoes last longer, and you learn a lot about shoes (and your feet) really quickly that way.

I am going to have a look for some wider shoes, although that does seem to be quite difficult over here (UK).

True.  On the other hand, if they know what type of specific physical activity (jogging, sprinting, hiking, walking, tennis, etc) the athlete/exerciser will be using the shoe for, they can often suggest a shoe as suggested by consumers who have supplied feed back.

May I ask, how much are you weighing? I had the same problem butmost of it was because I do aerobics and the arc of my feet it's too pronounced, so I had to look for shoes that could give a very good support to my feet specially my arc. The lady that attend me at Reebok told me that if I'm in a weight loss plan I should change my shoes minimum ever 3 months, because due to my actual weight and the type of workout I do, my shoes won't give the same support as they do when I first buy them. The sole and the support tend to be less even though I weight less. So I suggest you to check what type of feet you have and afterwards check for a shoe that can give you the support you really need for the type of workout you do. Also as someone said before when you workout your feet get swollen so I suggest to but maybe half size over or even one size over your real size.

See a podiatrist for your feet. He/She can evaluate your feet and see if there are problems. If you do have problems they can tell you what they are and give you orthortics if needed and tell you the right shoes to wear. Look on your shoes and see where you wear them out. Do you walk on the outside of your shoes, the inside etc. How high or low are your arches, are you supporting them correctly. 

I know this because I have several problems with my feet. 

Hope this helps. Feet problems can affect your gait, your knees, back, and make your feet hurt really bad.
