Hey Guys,
I was just wondering if you run with ankle weights does it help you to lose weight or just tone up? and do you burn more calories when you run with them?
also, what if yo run with dumbells? more calorie burn? more toning? more weight loss?
please answer -- i need help.
much love xx
You won't burn many more calories, you increase the risk of injury, and it is not a replacement for strength training.
DO NOT run with ankle weights
weighted vest ok...but no running with ankle weights...you knees will suffer. go here: www.ironwearfitness.com
A couple of years ago I used ankle weights for my walks. Eventually, they began to put far too much stress on my hamstrings, and I came very close to "popping" them.
hmmm i dont know about using them while running but my mom uses ankle weights with her walking dvd's.. and i use to use them while i would do my leg lifts...
I think using them for leg lifts is fine (although I think there are better exercises than leg lifts). I don't know if using them for a walking dvd would be advisable, but I doubt they are providing much benefit.
Maybe my mistake was not being satisfied with first using 1 and 1/2 pound ones, then going to 3 pounds each; finally, I bought the kind that allowed me to add additional weights into "slots" in compartments built into the ankle weights. In any case, I begin to have some definite problems with my hamstrings which completely went away when I quit using ankle weights. Perhaps, if I had been satisfied with just sticking to 3 pounds ones and not increasing to 10 pounds on each ankle, I would have been OK. However, I would caution against using ankle weights unless a fitness expert is advising that when used properly they can be of benefit.

Same here...I only use ankle weights for ab workouts...say if someone is throwing your legs from side to side as you lay on your back or if you are doing lifts for the butt area ...stuff like that is good, but other than that ehhhh. Any kind of walking and running I don't recommend...as you stride even in walk...it pulls on the joints...it's like having shoes that are way too heavy...that's why shoes are mostly under 1 pound.
But also, I think the placement of an ankle weight (above the foot) is different from even a heavy work boot that is over a pound, but has it's weight dispersed around your foot.

This thread in combination with the other bright spark who suggested running in Reebok Easytones... between the two of you you can make a couple of physios some seriously good income.
If you want to lose weight then you must be consistent and it must come naturally.
I do not run with extra attached weights. I eat almost 2500 cals per day.
I run 30 miles per week for fun and not for a hassle!
I lift very heavy weight for a female close to 80 % my actual weight of 145.
I do all this because every morning I have 7am til 12 noon free. so I exercise.
My jeans are falling off me and they are size 4 jeans. I weigh 145 lbs. I finish marathons in 3:45 which is 8 min 45 sec pace with stopping for drinks
My only pronblem is that I am not a prissy weak dumb female! I am a Masters
degree Math instructor in college?????????????????? Duh!
sound like you got some BODY there.... ![]()

While I can't say bragging on CC is not fun, cause it can be, I must say this post ummm lets say intrigues me. You joined yesterday and then you post this? Perhaps your expertise would best be used to educate others or discuss ideas with other people doing the same things - save your accomplishments for your profile since no one started attaking you here, not sure why you went on to defend how "smart" you are.
Ahhhhh mood swings from the roids it must be, LOL! :)
