Anyone hear of a Periformis Muscle? Sort of like sciatic nerve pain.

I've had this since Thanksgiving and I can't get relief from the pain. Literally, it is a PAIN IN THE BUTT!! I've been to chiropractors and no one is helping. I didn't know if there was any "walkers" out there that have ever had this problem.  I've had ultrasound and accupressure with no positive results yet. I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks!

Could be this...

Pilondial Cyst

May want to check it out

I had this problem for over a year.  My doctor suggested a back specialist.  I went in and he gave me a cortisone shot in the butt.  Actually 2 shots.   I think it helped a little bit but didn't cure it.  I usually just get the pain if I am sitting in a certain position.  I stretch a lot and try to avoid sitting on my right cheek a lot.  The doctor wasn't really sure if it was piriformis syndrome or not.  He suggested that if it continues to be a problem that I should get a CAT scan of my back.  They did a CAT scan of my hip already to rule out other causes of the pain.  The pain is much better and is hardly an issue anymore but I tried everything before.  I had ultrasound and physical therapy  and rest.... but without results.  I started running through it and found that it didn't really get any worse or better as I worked out- only when I sat was there pain.  I know how frustrating this can be!!  Hope things work out!
I feel like I wrote your post. Everything sounds exactly like my problem. Honestly, I feel better when I'm running or walking. Sitting is pure torture. What kind of stretches do you do?????
you just need to stretch it! don't get a shot for it! and inflamed piriformis can really mess with the sciatic nerve since they sit next to each other. try a massage of that muscle(it hurts but it is effective) and just stretch it out.
bodyscience is right - stretch it out or get a massage therapist to work it out for you .  here's a link to a good stretch you can do yourself:  http://www.jaxmed.com/massage/pirformis_stret ches.htm

I would lay on my back on bring my knees up and then cross one leg over the other... My explanation is terrible but if you look up piriformis stretches online they should have some diagrams....   I got a shot after seeing several doctors... It was a last resort type of thing.  I also would sit on a heating pad.  As for massage I tried sitting on a tennis ball and rolling it around on my butt.  I asked the physical therapist if that was a good idea and he said it was okay but to be careful not to dig in too much.  I wish I had a better answer for you... The doctors were not much help.  If I were you I would just try running through it and hopefully it will clear itself up.  I resumed my running in November after my shot... I am back up to around 30-40 miles a week and haven't had much problems.  THe doctor told me to give it heck and to run as much as I wanted - then if the pain got worse and I couldn't handle it we could take it to the next step.  Fortunately the pain has got better.  It might have been the shot or it might have been just a timing thing.

I am in my car a lot and I found that adjusting my seat height has helped too.  My work chair and my car seat are really high.  It seems to have helped also.   I feel for you.... it sucks.  Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks everyone. I'm going to try everything you suggested!!!!

This is the site I liked best for stretches - it has pictures of the stretches:  http://www.spine-health.com/Wellness/Exercise /Sciatica-Exercises/Piriformis-Syndrome-Exerc ise.html

These have worked well for me.

I don't specifically have this type of pain, but I can definitely relate. My suggestion would be to search your area and find a massage therapist that specializes in multiple types of massage. It might take a while, but it is definitely worth it. That way, if one thing doesn't help, another might. Plus, you can pretty much be sure that they've seen your condition before. Good luck and I hope you are pain free soon!
I'll try anything!! Yesterday, the doc made me get an x-ray in case there wasn't something else wrong with me. The next step is to go to New Jersey (4 hours away)  to a specialist that will inject antibodies into my piriformis muscle so that my body will concentrate on that muscle to heal it. I DON'T WANT TO DO THAT!!!!!! So, I'll take any advice from anyone!!!!
