Does anyone NOT workout with music?

Quote  |  Reply

I run outside several days a week for long distances (marathon training) and I absolutely cannot run with my iPod. No matter what contraption I use to keep it with me (arm band, waist clip, neck strap for shuffle, even just carrying it) it annoys me so much! I always want to skip songs, raise/lower the volume, play a song again, etc, and then I get cramps because I start running all awkwardly while I’m looking at the iPod.

I’m glad I can’t handle running with music though, because I have learned to really enjoy watching the world around me as I run by it, listening to my own breathing, imagining snappy comebacks I could have said in past conversations, making long lists of goals I want to achieve and places I want to visit… running in silence for these long distances is the only time during the day when I am truly by myself, and I love it!

Am I the only one out there running in silence??

I go to a gym, but no, I don't even own an iPod.  And truthfully, if you are running/walking/biking outside, I think it is dangerous, especially if you are around streets.  You just can't hear what is going on around you.  Not to mention that many audiologists cringe over headphones...

I don't need to listen to my music. Sometimes I get into my lifting as soon as I get to the gym and forget all about my iPod. But if I'm doing cardio on a machine, I NEEEEEED it. I hate cardio, so boring! Cycling outside I don't listen to music though. As poster #1 said, you need to be able to hear whats going on around you.

im a cyclist and i go on 30 or 40 mile rides almost every day and never listen to music. for one thing, i would probably die out there in traffic and after a while the beat just makes my head hurt and i want to rip them off (probably because i listen to electro house). i live in a beautiful area and the scenery is enough for me.

although, when i run i do like to listen to something upbeat and trancy. i dont run anymore because i hate it and it hurts my knees, but there are a few amazing songs that still remind me of running around the track, full of endorphins ahh feels good to listen to it now.

 This.

i cant workout without music if its cardio! i see alot of people do it and if they are next to me on the cardio machine i feel bad for some reason like they hear my loud music and its annoying to them haha.

a couple of years ago, if I didn't have my music I wouldn't work out. My mp3 player died on me and I left. Another day, I got there, realized I left it at home, and left. LOL

now, I'll go without if i forget, but I prefer it. Keeps people from conversing with me ;)

although, when I ran outside tuesday morning, i did not wear them for hte safety reasons mentioned above. I wanna hear the stray dogs/perverts if they are approaching me.

I need some new tunes though.

When lifting wieghts I often have the TV on tuned to GSN (game show network).

I'm a gameshow junkie and since it's not a "show" there is no plot to follow or anything, so getting distracted isn't a problem.   I love the trivia type stuff, or the new Nelywed show -- or sometimes I put on Ninja Warrior (on G4 network) for motivation.

So, typically no music for me.

Hahahahah I love this! Ninjas are great motivation.

And I admit, I do listen to music while walking my dog around my apartment complex. I can't take my dog anywhere without having at least 5 people ask OMG WHAT KIND OF DOG IS THAT WHERE DID YOU GET HER HOW MUCH DID SHE COST HOW BIG WILL SHE GET BLAH BLAH BLAH. Even if someone tries to talk to me I CAN'T HEAR THEM! Winner.

If im at home ill listen to music or watch tv, but if im outside i dont like using my ipod because then i cant hear if someone comes up behind me or something. I know it may sound like im kind of paranoid but the street i have to run on isnt very busy and i just feel to nervous if i cant hear whats going on around me. Thats a big reason why i hate to workout alone but around here its practically impossible to find a workout buddy.

I don't own ipods/mp3 players. Well my phone can but I don't have enough space.

I run outside so it's probably good that I'm not too immersed in music. And if I were listening to music, I'd be singing along and that can't go well with running. Though I have a feeling if I start listening to power metal, I just might run better..

If i'm at the gym, i NEED my ipod, i cannot stand the horrible techno pop music that they play at the gym!

And if i'm walking alone, i like to have music as well.

But, if i'm walking my dog, i can't have my ipod with me, too much multi tasking, since my dog is such a pain to walk :P

I always listen to my ipod when I go running, but I run on a track so there's less danger. I can run without it though, but I tend to go faster when I have it on (not sure why, I probably overthink things when I don't have music). I also make a running playlist to avoid changing songs and whatnot. My only annoyance is that sometimes my headphone cord starts flapping and hitting me, and occasionally the earbuds fall out (but I got new headphones now).

but whenever I walk or ride my bike it's without my ipod. I only really use it while running. When I randomly feel like going on the elliptical at home I'll watch tv.

i'm totally with you.  the ipod is just a distraction: it's never the right song or the right rhythm, and rather than helping me to zone out, it keeps me in the moment (waiting for a better bloody song).  i much prefer a silent, rural run or actually interacting with the people i meet (no, i don't mind stopping to talk or to let a kid pet my dog, and no, i won't scowl if i have to slow down for a crowd on the seawall.  i'm not out here to make myself miserable).

but i gotta say, i'm never faster than when coldplay's "strawberry swing" is playing Smile (luckily it's quite a short song, or i'd probably have a cardiac infarction).

I much prefer to be alone with my thoughts when I'm exercising.  I like having the time to work out stuff that's been bothering me during the day and plan out what we're going to have for dinner the next week and things like that.  I find music just too distracting and for safety reasons I don't listen to music when I'm biking anyway.

ooh - be careful!  i dunno about you, but when i'm running i often have these epiphanies during which everything becomes so clear, and i make great plans, but i've learned not to act on them because--let's face it--when i'm running, my blood is concentrated in my legs, heart, and lungs, not my brain.

i make baaaad decisions when i'm exercising Undecided.

I almost never listen to music while working out...just the way it is...no reason really...

It all depends on the situation/environment for me

When I'm outside riding my bike I can't listen to music or I'll probably die...when I'm running in the woods I'll put it on very low volume but if I'm around streets I'll go without it.

When I'm inside doing cardio I need music to keep me going

When I'm lifting I can't listen to music because it messes with my concentration

I totally agree with you!  Every single thing you said!

I especially hate when the headphones bounce back and forth and hit me in the chest, LOL.  I do enjoy music though, but it isn't comfortable when running so I do without it.

For a short time, I ran with my Shuffle (both generations), and neither was very annoying by itself.  The new one is nice because you can clip it somewhere.

But I found that I would change my pace to suit the song, not change the song to match my pace.  It was a distraction for me, and it made my runs more difficult.

So now I go without.  Even on those very long, solo runs.

I'm with the general consensus.  I love to be outside with no music.  Any activity.  But the moment I"m indoors on a cardio machine, I need the iPod or I die of boredom.  Nothing to look at, moving too much to read... I need *something* to get my mind of the monotony.

Which is why I reserve indoor runs for really late night runs when I don't feel safe outside.
