Any ladies with athletic bodies out there?  I am wondering... I played soccer almost all my life, now I run 5Ks, but I can't stand my calves.  I feel like I have too much muscle and they look big.  Anyone else feel that way or am I just being unrealistically self-conscious?

this article is more about thighs, but i figure the principle is the same

Although I tend to agree with the other posters that muscular legs are beautiful.

Find a good cobbler and have the boots stretched at the calves. I have shapely calves and a size 6 foot. I have to have all my boots stretched in the calves so they fit.  (I prefer the word shapely to fat or larger)

I have the same issue!  I was so self-conscious of them in high school that I quit track after two weeks because I felt it was making them bigger!!  I was a cheerleader and gymnast so that's where my calves came from.

Now that I'm 26 they don't bother me any more.  I'm more focused on getting rid of this belly fat (which I never used to have! UGH!).

Totally understand what you are saying.  I always have a big calves and arms too.  Even when I was only 99 lbs (i am 5'3"), my legs and arms are not slim.  Always bothers me but no solutions.....Since I have gained so much weight, I never wear skirt again.

I think bodyscience is right.  For me, it is a genetic thing and obviously I got it from my mum. I long to have those skinny legs and arms !

uhhhhhhhhhhhhh......going by ur pics...ur legs are fine....

listen....I think women with shapely legs are AWESOME!!!....100 percent...

I have stumps too. They run in my family. I thanked my mom and she told me to thank my grandpa. *shrugs* Just means no skinny jeans for me :)

It's just funny because I have the SMALLEST wrists, and the biggest calves and ankles ever.

what the hell is wrong with people in this thread?

big muscular calves and legs on a woman are absolutely gorgeous. Why in the world would you wanna get rid of them?

Dude, you're the one who bumped a zombie thread.

Oh wow, im scared and confused at the same time now.

LOL

Hey ladies...

I also have big legs/huge calves as I was a pretty serious ballet dancer back in the day. One thing I can say is that as you get older, these legs start looking pretty damn good if you take care of them. In 7th grade, the boys called me "thunder thighs." It was pretty hurtful, of course. When I was in my 20s, it was so fun to run into those boys in my hometown at a bar now and then, and watch them squirming to talk to me, find out if I was single, try to pick me up. ha, fools! Anyway, for those saying not to exercise your calves in hopes of them getting smaller, I completely disagree. My calves looked their best when I was working out with a personal trainer and I worked those calves! I lost about an inch in circumference, and they were beatifully defined and damn sexy in my opinion. When I am not working out as much, they get a little bigger/fatter. Also, I had great success and shrinking my calves down almost 2 inches when I was doing a lot of Pilates. Pilates works WONDERS for the short muscular woman, if you really commit to it. I was doing the Windsor Pilates videos, every day, alternating the 1 hour workout with the 20-minute workout. It really wasn't even that bad - I'd get home from work and bang out the hour or 20 minutes. Anyway - I always wore size 6 or 8 pants, which I know is small, but I'm also barely five feet and the rest of me was tiny... after 3 months or so of the intense Pilates, I was in size 2 jeans comfortably - not even tight. Pilates shrunk my legs by lengthening the muscles and cutting out any fat. I highly recommend Pilates for shrinking down and lengthening bulky legs. Did wonders for me. Even now at 33, I still see the long-term effects of Pilates on my legs. Try it!

Oh and PS - there isn't one guy I've been with who hasn't made a comment about my legs to the tune of "I LOVE YOUR LEGS!!!!"... this one guy I was dating was looking down at my legs once and he said "Your legs are so strong..." and for a second I had flashbacks of thunder-thunder-thunder Thighs (it did NOT help that I grew up in the late 80s when Thundercats was da bomb), but anyway I looked at him and he was like "it's sexy as hell!" It took me a while to believe that guys really dig my legs. At first I thought it was one guy trying to make me feel better about them, but when guy after guy starts telling you that they love your legs, it's time to think, hey maybe guys DO love shapely, healthy, muscular legs. To the young lady who said that the boy in school said "your legs are big" and kept staring... why do you think he kept staring, darlin'? Even if he wasn't showing it, I guarantee you he was mesmerized by your legs in a good way, just like all those boys who made fun of me back then probably were. EMBRACE YOUR SEXY LEGS, LADIES! (The boots thing is frustrating however, but like someone mentioned, many companies do carry wide-calf boot - zappos, j. crew, and more... just do a google search...)

To me a woman with a body that exudes strength and a confident attitude is far far sexier than a diminutive woman with a skinny model like body.

You girls are crazy! Big calves are not a curse - they should be celebrated! I can't think of anything sexier than a woman with athletic, muscular, and yes "big" legs. Now if that rational doesn't put me in the minority of men my preference for smallish breasts certainly will. To me the combination screams healthy and athletic! If additional words of encouragement are required - just let me know.

I also have muscular calves, but I love them!  I wish that the rest of me was as toned as my legs.  I feel the pain of the knee high boot at a reasonable price!

Like a lot of the girls here said, I like that I have muscular calves.  Its the one part of me that is actually muscular without trying and ive always loved them, even at my heavier weight.  Buying boots can be a bit troublesome but when you do find the perfect pair its always wonderful.  Especially ones with a heel to show the calves off even more.

I've also decided that i absolutely LOVE wearing black tights/leggings.  They still cling to the shape of your leg, showing off everything, but the black is very slimming.  The one time I wore a sweater dress with black patterned tights and high-heeled boots and I got a ton of compliments.  It looks good with flats too!
