Broken Ankle?

Quote  |  Reply

I rolled my ankle almost two weeks ago... at the time I heard a loud crack and immediately could not stand up or put any weight on it whatsoever. However, about ten minutes later I could walk on it even though it was still tender.

It's not discolored but its been swollen ever since and I cant roll my foot inwards without a sharp, stabbing pain. The swelling isn't too bad but its definitely noticible. I've been able to walk and run on it... keeping my foot forwards causes no pain but the minute I turn my foot inward it hurts a lot.

Is this worth getting checked out? I highly doubt its broken since I can still walk on it and its not blue/purple. For the most part I don't think they can do anything except crutches (which won't work for my college labs anyway) and ice (which has yet to do anything). I can't wrap it since any pressure hurts.

Wow.. you are trying to run on it...?  I think resting it for a few weeks will be the best option but I'm sure that is what your doctor is going to tell you when you go see him/her.  (GO SEE YOUR DOCTOR)

You could have torn a ligament.  I think you should have it looked at.

Might be a sprain...I did that to my thumb (dont ask) and it turned purple like that, and the doc said it was a sprain...don't know if the same goes for ankles, go see your doctor :P

You need to see a doctor. Taking advice on this from a forum is not appropriate. Someone needs to examine it and determine if you need any treatment, or further tests.

Just because it's possibly not broken doesn't mean that it will heal properly on it's own.  It's been two weeks, I'd have been to doctor 10 days ago.

I guess what I'm getting at is anything bad going to happen if I don't see a doctor?

The risk is that the injury might heal improperly, and give you trouble for the rest of your life.

Yes, bad things are very likely to happen if you don't see a doctor.  The foot/ankle is a complicated mechanism that you only have two of.  It's well worth an x-ray and a trip to the doctor to figure out what you need to do next...avoid cortisone shots to numb the pain.

If it's cost, try going to a free clinic or planned parenthood.

I'm giving it another week before getting it checked out... Mostly due to the fact that I'm busy with school and work during the time the Dr/clinic's are open until sometime next week. I hope to God I didn't tear another ligament though... I've already managed to tear my ATFL on my other ankle.

Cortisone shots hurt like hell but they feel amazing! Unfortunately, they are absolutely terrible for you too in the long term.

I would go as soon as you can, even if it means having to miss school or work.  But regardless, I hope you stay off of it!

Hi

I had exactly the same thing happen on Feb 5th, I had the crack also, and I could walk on it about 10 minutes later - with extreme pain, and YES it was broken.  The doctor said that often what happens is when the ligament gets a sudden very forceful movement - like an anle roll or severe sprain (mine was catching my heel on the side of a hole) it is very strong and snaps back, but a bit of the bone flakes away with it.  Technically that is a break.  I was in a boot for two weeks - needed to be immobilised.

Might pay to get it looked at asap
