Do you burn more calories walking in heels?

Quote  |  Reply

Seems like a tad of a ridiculous question, but do we burn more calories when we walk in heels?
It sort of seems like we would- as it's harder work to walk with a few inches hanging off the bottom of your foot (and also adds weight), but it may be a negligible difference (like a single calorie, or the like).

Anyone know for sure?

Good question. I'd like to know too. My sister told me it helps tone your legs... but what does she know.

I know strippers have hot bodies before, but I am pretty sure there is a reason stipping classes became a workout fad. Not only the dancing, but high heels aren't easy to walk, jump, run, or dance in. I am sure you would burn more calories, maybe not tons, but a little bit more to the average joe in her flats.

When I say average joe in HER flats, I mean average Josefina.

:)

I know it tones legs (but that's not important, since I already have plenty of leg muscle). I wish it could make your upper thighs smaller xD

And ralplovestrixie- that's sort of what I was thinking, but I wasn't sure.

I love wearing heels a couple times a week, and I always notice I feel more healthy after a day in them, which is why I was wondering.

I have no idea, but it definitely uses different muscles than normal walking.  I can feel it in my calves if I walk around in heels all day.  It's not great for your hamstrings though - I think prolonged wearing of heels shortens them or makes them less flexible?

My brother's basketball coaches used to give them these shoes with platforms at the from (like a reverse high heel) to help them tone their calves so they could jump higher.

Of course you do.  You burn calories just breathing, but I think your question is likely.. Do you burn more calories walking in heals than in flat shoes.

I would think not if you are walking at the same pace, but as others have pointed out you use different muscles.  The only way to tell would be to use a heart monitor I would think. Not hard to check out 5 min walk with versus without if you have the one that counts your calories.

It may just be that I am a klutz, but I walk more slowly in higher heels.  Therefore, I think that I burn fewer calories when wearing them.

I would think it would be a minimal amount. How far are you going to walk in your fricking heels anyway? They're great but not for walking any distance or at a fast pace. If you want to burn calories, throw on some runners, get out there and get moving :)

I wear heels EVERY DAY! I love the way they make me feel (confident), the things they do for my posture, and just how sexy I feel in them. I have really strong calves anyway - but I don't think they burn any extra calories! I just think they make me feel better! I have found it's really important to stretch when you're working out though (especially your hamstrings) because your calves get a really good workout when you're wearing them, but the rest of your leg doesn't really.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I burn more calories waving my arms around trying to keep from falling over.

You won't burn more calories in heels than you would in flats (unless you are walking longer distances or walking really fast). It makes your calf muscle pop so your legs look more shapely (hence you feel good, sexy and confident).

If you wear high heels every day, all day, you could end up shortening your hamstring.

I know someone this happened to... she was very tiny, just 5' tall, and felt she needed to wear heels all the time to bring her up to everyone else's height.. after many years of this,  even when she takes her shoes off, she now has to walk on tip-toe because she cannot put her foot flat any more.

I am a runner =P.  Was just curious, because hey, wearing a pair of heels would make me feel even MORE confidant if I knew they were burning a few more calories!

sharlynorton- my favourite part about wearing them is showing off my calves even more!  It's the perfect incentive for NOT giving up running, even when it's such a pain getting up at 5 each morning.

chris1208- That is the reason I avoid heels TOO high!

glos2lv- I'm careful not to wear them too often- for fear of that happening to me. Yikes.

LOL I am sure I would be flat on my back in an abulance in no time at all.
