im running my first 5k in a few weeks and want to know how many calories are burnt doing that!
Depends on your weight and speed. Enter it into your activity log as running and how ever many minutes you expect it to take you and the speed related. It will tell you the answer
It also depends on how fast you run/how hard you exert yourself since that will make your heart rate higher. More calories will be burned if you're going full out compared to taking a leisurely jog.
Comparison, I can run 5k in 30-35 mins, with my HR around 150-160 and I'll burn 350 - 500 cals (age 30, 5'6", ~160 lbs). I get this reading from my heart rate monitor. Some people may burn 700 cals. It's very individual.
I've heard a good rule of thumb is a 100 calories a mile, which lines exactly up with what my personal HR monitor used to say when I would run. I'm sure it varies greatly from person to person, but running and jogging, are big calorie burners!
True, your burn rate is higher, but for a given distance, your run time is correspondingly shorter. Total energy cost of running can be estimated at 0.75 kcal/mile/lb, so a 131-lb runner burns about 98 kcal/mile, or around 300 kcal for a 5k. Note that this is largely independent of pace; you're performing the same amount of work (force * distance). All that changes with pace is required power.
also it depends on how fit you are.. If you have been doing excercise for a while you get fitter and develop more efficient musculature which reduces the number of calories burnt.. so as everybody has said is very personal
It varies but my Garmin (age & weight based) typically averages about 140 cals per mile. So figure 400 to 450 for a 5k.
