Exercise recommendations?

Quote  |  Reply

I really love running and walking, but I have plantar fasciitis and get tendinitis in my ankles when I do it, even with well supported feet. I won't do strength training of any sort other than mild calisthenics because I build muscle way too fast and too much if I do. I like yoga, but I'm not flexible at all.
I want a lithe runner's body, but can't run. Can anyone recommend any exercise I can do?

Swimming?

No access to a pool or a gym :/

how about nordic walking? it puts so less stress on your joints! and it is also very rewarding ;) 328 cal/hr and you can look around the path(ideally a forest)

swimming would do, you shall maybe search more or find a local pond. summer is close so you could at least exercise in the water(aquagym).

good luck!

LIE: Weight training will make you huge and masculine.

Probably the worst lie ever. People look at women bodybuilders and say, “Ohmigawd, they’re huge and if I lift anything heavy I’ll look like that too.” Nope. In general, women are not able to build monstrous muscle mass in the same manner as men, due to a number of physiological factors. It’s a rare woman that can become a competitive bodybuilder, and to get that big she has to combine genetics, extensive long-term training, strict diet, and supplementation (legal or otherwise).

Bulky Muscles and Women: The Truth.

How to get a body like Jessica Biel.

I have PF and switched to elliptical - or get a bike.

also the "build muscle fast" is bull hockey- I am going to assume you are female I have been trying for YEARS to build muscle and have yet to obtain that goal.   I have lost fat though and have great looking arms, my legs are shapely and my bum is nice and perky - and I'm in my 50's.

some things you could try are Zuzana Light's youtube channel- now tell me she is 'bulky"!

next if you like yoga do it.  Of course you aren't going to be flexible at the beginning, but like anything you have to do it to achieve a goal- you can't just say I like the guitar but I can't do it cause I don't know how to play it-.  I am sure if you asked anyone who does yoga how flexible they were when they started vs today they would tell you it took a lot of practice.

Maybe try pilates.  Try zumba - there are a lot of zumba studios around lately.  Kickboxing, BJJ, dancing could be fun too.

I didn't mean bulky as in masculine. I know from personal experience that I get, or at least what I consider, bulky. My mother is the exact same way; it's genetic. We build muscle quickly and build a lot of it.

And Nordic walking sounds interesting, but it would still mess with my feet :c It isn't the joints that get messed up, it's my tendons.

OK then tell us why you wouldn't want muscle?  Muscle boosts your metabolism helping you burn more calories and fat.  Also a benefit for females is it builds your bones too.

I think if you are really looking for the best workout for the benefit of your body is weight lifting.  Muscle takes up less space and makes you look thinner.  I wear a size 6 pant and weigh more than I did years ago when I just walked to lose weight  and only got to a size 8 - I also feel more confident in a tank top or spaghetti strap cause my arms and shoulders are firm and shapely not flabby.

I don't have access to a gym. Plus, I'm doing calisthenics already, so I have some muscle already. I'm mainly looking for a form of cardio to add to my work outs.

Well like I recommended in my first post go to zuzana Light's you tube channel and do those. If you don't have a good cardio workout with those then you aren't doing them right.

Wow, I love her videos! Zuzka is great! Thank you :D

I would recommended biking! Since I have gotten stress fractures in my legs before because I running, I know where you are coming from. Biking reduces the stress on your ankles especially.

I hope this helps!:)

Biking sounds great! Plenty of hills in my neighborhood for me to tackle! Hahah :D

Oh that sounds like a GREATTTT....time! Someone also recommended an elliptical but if you want to get some fresh-air, biking is much better:)

Have you looked at ChiWalking or ChiRunning or other similar low-impact aerobics?

http://www.chiwalking.com/what-is-chiwalking/

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJ4RReoYYlg

Never heard of it, I'll have to check it out.

In other news, I'm in the email newsletter?! Cool!

First check your footwear-I had a case of plantar fasciitis due to improper footwear-I also started running in a pool-much less stress on your joints and burns up 11-15 cal/min; if you have no access to water, stationary bike, running on a mini-tramp or armchair aerobics; check the internet for DVD's-best of luck!

Hi, I have the same problem. Plus years ago I sprained my ankle. The only thing that made it possible for me to walk were simple foot & ankle stretches that I googled. There are non weight bearing stretches for planter & ankles. I also use a recumbant bike on days I can not walk for cardio.

Yes, I agree, stretching is very, very important!

How about water aerobics?

I'm the same, - I have little short muscles, that bulged even before I started any kind of training. I'm so sick of people telling me I need to do weight traning because "women don't build bulky muscles, in general". I stick to body-weight training like yoga, pilates and sports conditioning. Weight training is not the hold grail and it's ok to avoid doing it as long as your building strength and flexibility.

Try yoga again - you don't need to be flexible to do it, but you will GET flexible.

Allergy Remedies
Is It Possible to Go Natural?
The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
