Exercising when sick?
I've been alternating between cardio and strength training for 6 days a week and this is the first time I've gotten sick since I started my routine. I was wondering if it was okay or even better to exercise when you are sick. I have a sore throat, runny nose, and a slight cough. I don't think I have a fever but I'm slightly warmer than usual. I'm not sure if I should be doing my normal exercises because I feel a little bit sore. So I'd like to know if it was okay to be doing exercise :P I tried a little bit of yoga, but stretching made my legs and back really sore, so I'm not sure what I should do. Thanks for any suggestions! :D
Sore throat and runny nose? Possibly okay. Add in a cough though and I wouldn't - the rule of thumb for ages has been that it's okay to exercise if you're only sick/congested above the throat and not okay if it's from the throad on down. There was a meta-study done last year that confirmed that as valid, exercise doesn't interfere with the time-course of a common cold or any number of upper respiratory tract infections, but there are some lower respiratory tract infections where exercise can delay healing and extend the duration of your sickness.
Thanks for the reply! I guess I should probably stay in bed until I'm a little better :P I'm just really scared it'll be hard to start on exercising again after not doing it for a long time.
