# Fitness standard times for 1 mile run?

Is there some sort of chart that lists what minute mile you should be able to accomplish if you are average physical fitness, above average, superior, athlete, etc...? I oculd only find this:

but they only list what is at the 50th percentile for my age (10:22) and what's at the 85th (8:15). But i'm curious to know what's in between.

That link doesn't work.  I would love to see it though.  Maybe you can tell me what the percentiles are for someone my age?  I'm 21.

The link works as long as you paste both pieces into your browser.  Also, the chart doesn't go up to 21 (only 17).

I'm not sure of the answer by age, but apparently a 10 minute mile is average (http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_the_average _time_it_takes_to_run_a_mile)

Yea.. it seems fast to me too *shrug*  I wouldn't put too much stock into that answer it is just from wikianswers.

If the 10-minute mile is based on any actual data, there's probably the prerequisite that the people can actually finish a mile, running the whole way.  And in that case, a 10-minute mile could easily be average, as it's fairly slow in [absolute] running terms.

Yeah, a ten minute mile sounds about average because I think most people consider a 6.0 pace to be just average running.  Not too slow, and not too fast.  So a 10 min average sounds about right.

If a 10 minute mile is average, I must be running through molasses or something.

Keep in mind that they're talking about running just one mile.  Or at least that's what I thought we were talking about.  If you can do 2.4 miles in 25 minutes, you can probably run one mile in nine or so.

And in my experience, the slower you are, the more fun you are to talk to at races (I am running 11-11.5 min/mi these days...  I walked a race once because I was recovering from an injury, and I had a blast!  The back-of-the-packers have better stories, are more cheerful, and seem to be more grateful to have volunteers helping them out and cheering them on.)

If the average is 10 minutes, then I must be in horrible shape!

I'm sure I can do it, but I'm also sure I'd have to fight tooth and nail to make that time.

Alle, I cover about 2.3 miles in 30 minutes, so feel speedy. I'm also about 201 pounds, so I guess that's an excuse.

My best mile time was today - 11:48. I'm proud of being slow. If I can do THAT at 201, people better watch out when I'm 160.

If you like, you can use the US Air Force physical fitness test as a benchmark. Females in the AF get maximum points by running 1.5 miles in 11:07 or less. If you maximize every other category (pushups, situps, and waist measurement) you can squeeze by with a 17+ minute 1.5 mile. It's a pretty general (but effective) test of fitness. Also, you shouldn't test yourself on a treadmill (this is for anyone). Use a car or a pedometer to measure a relatively level road course. Purdue researchers found runners of all fitness levels chose lower run speeds when running on a treadmill as opposed to running on the road. Plus, the scenery changes are nice.

Personally, I run my 1.5mi in 11:00 - a 7:30 mile. I'm 21, male, 5' 10, 177, and reasonably fit.

Be honest - anything less than a 6-7 minute mile is not much more than fast walking. Seriously - in the military we do large group runs at about 6 minute pace, during which it's easily possible to keep pace without picking up your feet ("running"). Running is 7 parts mental, 3 parts physical. It's all about how motivated you are.

This is sort of funny because we routinely pass up a large group of Army runners when we run.  If I am going 9min/mile, they must be going 12 min/mile.  I've watched them to see how far they go too - they do three loops on a 1.3 mile trail. So, their slow pace can't be due to a long distance.  *shrug*  My bf likes to make fun of them because he's a former Marine and thinks all ofther branches are whimp ;)
