Why am I so hungry after my workouts?!?!?!?

Quote  |  Reply

I just finished 30 Day Shred Level 1, Day 8 last night!  That's 8 Jillian workouts in the last 9 days, in addition to 5x per week treadmill walks (only 15 minutes) and/or 15 min sessions on the elliptical.

My question is...why am I always so hungry after my evening workouts?!?  I am drinking plenty of water before, during and after working out.  I am generally eating between 1400-1700 calories per day, sometimes slightly more.  I have my meter set to light activity since I have a desk job and the only exercise I really get are my workouts and housework when I get home.

I am 34, 5'4" tall and weigh about 170.

Ideas anyone?

It's totally normal and healthy to be super hungry after a tough workout.

Mary (the health guru) recommends eating a meal containing carbs and protein 30 minutes after exercise. This will NOT prevent you from losing weight, but will help your body to release fat because it won't feel starved. Also, any protein you eat will be used to rebuild your muscle fibers that were worked during exercise.

Are your muscles ever sore the day after a Jillian workout? If so, then you should definitely eat protein after those workouts, because they are taxing your muscles enough that they need to be repaired.

In short: always eat at least something if you are really, truly hungry! Laughing

I hope this helps.

PS: On your workout days, how many calories do you burn? The max daily calorie deficit is 1000. So ex, if you burn 2800 cals in a day with exercise, then you should eat at least 1800 cals that day. Good luck!

Thanks for your reply!  I was worried because I hear people say they are not hungry after they work out.  I definitely am hungry and my muscles are sore the next day.  I'll have to think of a good low calorie protein/carb snack to have after I work out.  Part of the problem is also that I work out fairly late at night, (8:30pm or so) but that really can't be helped because of my schedule.

According to my burn meter I am burning about 2300-2400 calories on my big workout days, so I'm pretty sure I am at 1000 or less deficit.  My meter is set at light activity.

Thanks so much!

don't worry! i'm always hungry!! :P

Congrats on your shred progress..recognizing that you are famished, it is super important that you have a plan about what you are going to eat.  Have the healthy meals and snacks line up and ready to go.

also, you mentioned a couple of times that your activity is set to "light"...just confirming that you are also logging your workouts?

lcuconley,

I do log my workouts, thanks for checking!

I appreciate the advice and feedback from everyone!

Angie
