Im reading this book that says the way you look is 80% nutrition, 10% fitness, and 10% genetics.

Is this true? If so does it mean you can look good and lose weight without exercising? Don't people have to work out and train to look the way they do. Are the percents correct?

You can lose weight without exercising, but you won't look fit. You might get to looking skinny though. To look fit, you have to exercise.

Read the rest of the book, btw.

lol yes i am. Didnt get to finish the entire book yet, but was just curious as to what else people had to say.

I think that that 10% of fitness is very important. But the thing is, the fitness won't help you that much unless your nutrition is good. If you work out like crazy, do all the right exercises, but don't have a balanced healthy diet, it's not gonna help much.

Who do you think looks better in this article?  The emaciated nicole richie or Michelle Parker (the one in the red bikini) who's the same height, yet carrying more muscle (built by weight training).  Look at the other pics too, would you rather look like richie or the other girls?  You need to do some training to look like these other girls. 

Say you only weight train 4 days a week for an hour.  That's less than 10 percent of your waking hours (4 / (16 hrs / day x 7 days a week)) yet that will make a difference in how you look assuming your nutrition is on.

I agree with what the others said. I was training for a 10k mudrun last summer and I was runningaround 10+ miles a week and lifting. I didnt lose a pound cause I was eating so much to replace what I lost. I didnt expect to be insanely hungry when I started training so I just ate mass amounts of proteins and carbs. Anyway, In the past month and a half ive lost almost 4 lbs because ive been eating a more nutritious balanced diet, working out has been about once a week.

Yes I agree with that because what did people do before a gym? I've read that people that live over 100 do not have any formalized exercise program. They walk, carry groceries up a hill, or do recreational activities like hiking. I'm pretty sure none of them eat cheetos.

Fitness doesn't just occur in a gym.

 This is exactly why exercise plays a minor role in a Weight Loss Plan; A lot of times the compensatory effects kick in and you don't even realize you are eating more.

People used to eat more natural foods, but they were also much more active. So I'm not sure you can point to one or the other. I used to work on a farm and the owner started work at 4:30am, worked for 2.5 hours, and then went home and ate breakfast. He ate a ton of food, but he would also squeeze more activity in before breakfast than I do in an entire week.

 

All the factors are so dependent on eachother, I feel like it's impossible to give their importance percentages. If you want to look fit at a healthy weight and toned, you need both diet and exercise.

I trained for a marathon for 4 months, and didn't lose more than 3 pounds. I also ate HORRIBLY. We're talking pizza for breakfast. Then I realized, the problem was my diet. I went out and bought a ton of books explaining how to eat healthy, and went with it. After I altered my diet, I lost 25 pounds without working out.

Then I hit my goal weight, but my body wasn't how I expected it to look! So I picked back with exercise, kept eating only nutritious foods, and lost an additional 12 pounds and gained muscle.

Diet and exercise are the dynamic duo. Now I'm wearing a bikini on the beach for the first time ever, and no one in my family wears bikinis. TAKE THAT, GENETICS!

 

I don't know what this book is about, but the way the sentence is phrased - "the way you look..."- leads me to believe the author isn't necessarily talking just about body weight. Good nutrition benefits SO MUCH MORE than just the size/composition of your body. Lots of fruits and veggies give your skin a natural healthy glow, good fats are great for your hair and nails, etc. Plus, you can run and lift weights until the cows come home, but if you're eating nothing but junk,  you're still not going to look like a bikini model (as those above me have pointed out)

So, when I look at it that way, I totally agree with the 80% nutrition 10% fitness claim!

 

I'd say more like 70% nutrition 20% exercise 10% genetics but pretty close tghe majority is eating right and in moderation. Then after that get some exercise in and some good genes help.

Yeah, diet IS the biggest component, followed by exercise, followed by genetics.

ANYONE can look amazing if they eat right and exercise right, but only a small fraction of people can compete as a natural in body contests (this is where genetics comes in, it's that last leg-up).
