Little bit of exercise to lose weight. Will it work?

Quote  |  Reply
I've been going to the gym twice a week, for an hour each day. I could always add in another day, but transportation and school work has been an issue. So for twice a week, an hour a day, on the treadmill, will I lose weight? I usually walk 15 min around 3 mph and run 15 min 5 mph. I usually eat 1700 calories on workout days and 1500 calories on non-workout days.
Also, would running lower my blood pressure? Lately, it's spiked up! I went from 110/59 to 116/68 within 3 days :(
Please help! If stats would help any..

Age: 16
Weight: 155 (ranges from 153 to 156)
Height: 5'7"
Goal weight: 140
(My ultimate goal weight would be 135, but right now, I'd like to hit 140)

Since you are a teen you need to eat a lot more - also I'm going to assume you are female.

Any exercise will help you but you probably need to eat more not less

If you are getting worried and anxious about your weight, that is probably what caused your blood pressure spike. My blood pressure is usually around 110/60, but I get very nervous when I meet new people, especially guys. So, I had a "fitness assessment" at my new gym and when the head trainer (male) took my blood pressure it was 139/88. Because of how fit I was, he agreed with me that my blood pressure was up because I was nervous. When I took it with my wrist cuff later that night (the same brand he used earlier that day) it read 105/58.

You definately need to eat more since your bones and body are still growing. When you work out, how high is the intensity at which you are working? If I were you, I would get a HR monitor so you can monitor how hard of a workout you are getting. I credit interval training with getting my body in the great shape it is in now (still could be better though). If you can afford it, get some advice from a trainer or dietician. CC's tools are not calibrated for teens to use. You have a completely different set of intake needs than my 26 year old body does.

Hope this helps, best of luck!

I'd agree with the eat more.  I'm 26, 5'6, 150 pounds, and started losing on 1800 calories a day.  Up your calories on your workout days to 2100 and on non workout days to around 1800 because your body is still growing.  You don't want to lower them too much when you're exercising... then your weight'll stick. Agh. Frustrating. Add more quality protein, as well - chicken, tuna, eggs, steak, yadda, yadda.

Also, when you're walking, you could try bumping the speed up to around 3.5?  You've got an inch on me, and I'm walking at 3.8 comfortably.  That'll get your HR up a little more so you'll burn faster the two days you do work out.  Don't worry about adding another day in if you can't make it.  Maybe just a long walk when you get home, or I even jump around on a mini trampoline while watching tv :)

The exercise in general will help with your blood pressure.  Mine at 215 pounds was 180/110, something around there.  It's now at 109/68.

:D
