How long does it take to see the results of working out?

I'm trying to lose weight, but I'm not overweight, but I still feel I can be thinner. I'm also trying to tone up by doing 30 minutes of strength training a day, 3X a week, and 20-30 minutes of running 3X a week.

How long do you think it will be until I start noticing my body toning up? I'm not looking for 6-pack abs here, just starting to see some muscle tone.

That sort of depends on your body fat percentage. The higher it is the longer it will take. It also depends on the quality of your diet.

Getting the body you want can be a slow process. Be patient, and just enjoy the short-term benefits, like reduced stress and better strength.

What exactly do you mean when you say ''strength training''. What do you do for those 20-30 mins?

What is your nutrition like?

So much goes into getting a 'toned' body with noticeable muscle definition. It took me years of hard training and strick nutrition to get to where I am at now. [Which, imo, is a slender woman with obvious muscular defintion].

I guess I just need more specifics...but I will tell you that your nutrition will play a huge part.

It took me about 3 or 4 months to notice much. I had very little muscle to begin with, as the others have said you need to be more specific.

Well, I've been using a program for the Xbox called "Yourself!Fitness", and it has a whole fitness program. Lots of people I know that have used it love it, so I've been giving it a try. So far I've been doing narrow pushups, squat thrusts (with dumb bells), bicep curls, plie upright rows, bent over rows, that sort of thing for about 25 minutes. So far I've been doing anywhere from 8-12 reps.

As for diet, I've been cutting way down on refined/processed foods, and sticking to 6 oz grain (half whole), 3 servings of vegetables, 1.5 serv fruit, 3 cups milk, 5 oz meat/protein. Also counting calories (1800 a day).

 

Does that help?

Were those 8-12 reps hard to complete? Or did you just do 8-12 because that's what the program said to, when you may have been able to complete more reps?

in two weeks i noticed results from daily pushups.  less then a month from daily planks.  i also run 6 days a wk. usually 30 miles but with all the snow its been more 20 and 25mi/wks as of late =/

when i did body pump classes about 3x/wk less than a month.  i also did cardio.

and i eat well so maybe thats why i saw results so soon with so little?

^  Bmx hit the nail on the head.   This is the critical question in this case, I believe.

uh you do realize that to get a "toned" look its all related to body fat levels... and in order to see significant results from working out you have to be consistent at it, it takes time. factors such as workout intensity, diet,  rest, age, genetics, etc... all come into play.

Personally I recently changed my workout routine. previously i used to run 6-7 times a week and did full body workouts 3 times a week.. that didnt get me much of anywhere... only made me skinny and weak.

my new routine now consists of only doing cardiovascular work 3 days a week and lifting 4-5 days a week on a split program, meaning i plan my workouts ahead and i only train on body part per day, such as chest one day, back another, arms another, shoulders another and legs another. this way i can give it my all for one body part and train it till failure once a week. I been in this program for just a bit over a month and my gains have been significantly better than when I was doing full body workouts and just running.

it hasnt taken long to see my chest start to stand out more, my back and lateral muscles have become more visible and as well as my arms and legs. Also i am dropping body fat faster than I was when i was just doing cardio and my body composition is improving, ive also lost inches on my waist (heck im considering buding new pants).. most noticeably is that the weight on my scale is either mantaining or going up, yet im getting more muscle definition. my diet is very clean too, 45 percent carbs, 30 percent protein and 25 percent fat. I also cycle my calories and lower my carbs on days when I dont do any resistance training, this creates the perfect enviroment for muscle gains and fat loss as it creates constant insulin sensitivity.

It_jesus, what did your "full body workout" look like?

I get the feeling you're not actually referring to compound lifts.

I started training again after injury... started again on 8th Jan... mainly various HIIT, low reps/high weight strength training, & pilates.  I could see improvements within 3-4 weeks both in terms of strength and tone.

The program will ask consistently if you were working hard, or if it was too easy. When I was done with the entire workout, I felt like I just made it. Very burnt out. But I didn't feel like that after every set.

And I understand I'm not going to be ripped, and I also understand I'm not going to get toned in a week, and maybe not even in a year. Just wanted to get an idea of when my body might start to show some definition. Pure curiosity.

depends on your body type, my body builds muscle really easily so I noticed changes [like big changes, other people noticed too] in like 2/3 weeks but I know people who work out for months and dont really see a vast difference

being male though you're probably going to build muscle easier than most of the girls I speak to =P

5 days... 4.5 if you're lucky.
