So I just joined a gym and signed up for some personal training. To say that I'm out of shape would be probably and understatement. So the trainer had me do some weights and my arms didn't hurt on Sunday after the work out, but yesterday (Monday) they were sore. Today (Tuesday) they are killing me. So how long should I be hurting for? Any idea or ways to make my arms not hurt?
muscle soreness is often worst the second day after your workout. It is called DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness). It will go away this week. And you'll get less sore after workouts as your body gets used to the exercises. You'll still get sore again when your body does something else new and unfamiliar.
For me, the soreness goes away after three or four days. Your body will get used to it, though. You can try different workouts to see what kind of activities your body is not used to.
It's called DOMS (Delayed On-Set Muscle Soreness). It's the pain you get a day or two (or sometimes three!) after working out those muscles. You can feel it for anywhere between 2 to 5 days...or around that at least.
What happens is every time you move, your muscle fibers tear (very slightly, might I add). When you work out, you are tearing those muscle fibers even more. When you tear them, your body must repair them. The area swells and pushes on your nerves and arteries and causes pain <- (this is the latest theory, before it was said that it was caused by lactic acid build-up, which is untrue because lactic acid levels deplete within several short hours of your workout)
Your muscles are hurting because your body is repairing them. The pain will go away soon, but try not to push yourself there again.
Also, it doesn't have to happen every time your body tries something new and different. Just when you try something new and you push yourself a little too hard (usually you dont know your boundaries when it's new to you)
i started working out with a trainer about 2 months ago, and she had me use weights. after the first work-out, i was so so SO sore for a good five days.
but since then, i've continued the work-outs and even upped the weight. i don't get nearly as sore. just a little bit the next day, and it's the good "i actually did something in the gym sore" not the, "i can't get out of my chair" sore :p
