Low impact workourt that won't injure my foot!

Quote  |  Reply

Hello all,

I am currently close at my all time high beside last year when I was pregnant. My body is currently feeling the extra weight with all kind of random aches especially in my right Achilles tendon which hurts on and off (I had previously injured it when my weight was creeping up).

Can anybody please suggest good low impact workouts that would help me lose some weight without injuring my foot?

I am currently using the elliptical but I'd like to bring variety to my workout.

Thank you very much!

J.

Swimming? Stationary bike? Rowing machine? Upper body weights?

I currently have achilles tendonitis from wearing high heels for hours at a time so I feel your pain.  My doctor and physical therapist told me that swimming and biking are okay.  Both stationary bike and road bike.

I'm not a doctor, but every source I've consulted has advised strongly against running if you're experiencing any achilles tendon pain.  My physical therapist also told me to avoid the elliptical until I am pain free.  (I have total exercise envy when I see other people at the gym using the ellipticals and the treadmills with no problem.)  However, your situation could be completely different from mine so the elliptical may be alright if your doctor has approved it.

Having foot and ankle problems is no fun since it is so hard to rest those areas.  Hope you feel better soon!

Thanks Kat! I've given my heels a rest and I've stopped the elliptical. I think it was making it worst! As you said, it's not easy seeing people going at it at the gym and not having many options. I'm not much of a swimmer so that limits me even more. Guess I'll just have to take it slow until I'm fully healed. Hope you feel better very soon too, right in time for summer workouts!

I am also having workout envy -- having pain from plantar fasciitas and heel spur - not fun!!  I am managing to do a little tennis, and then icing it (which seems to help a lot).  I think I might be biking soon as that doesn't aggravate it.  Hope everyone heals!!

Feel better NYCgurl! I don't know how you even manage to play tennis! That's great! Be very careful though!

Not really "playing", but more "careful" practicing!  Concentrating on hitting, and not on running -- just to get out and do something that is fun!!

Had that in both my legs, adequate running shoes, stretching and brisk walking helped in losing weight, and the pain went away on it's own eventually. The pain was worse immediately after waking up, had to support myself on furniture on the way to the bathroom.

I cannot even imagine having it in both feet!!  I've had it since January, but it seems to have gotten better in the past week or so.  I can deal with the morning soreness, if I can walk the rest of the day.

I have been through several pairs of running shoes already, (and different insole supports ) searching for some relief. Sometimes my foot is better with them, sometimes without.

Sounds painful! Hopefully like you, those aches will stop reoccurring as I lose weight!

Yeah, swimming and biking are always good low-impact.

Do you see a physical therapist? A PT might have some strengthening exercises that can help you. A lot of injuries are a result of inadequate muscle support.
