"Popping" sensation in legs after walking?

Quote  |  Reply

I've been going on lunch-hour walks with coworkers lately, and when I get back to my desk, I notice this strange "popping" sensation in my legs afterwards.

Does anyone know what this is?

Edit: It's kind of in my muscles...not joints or anything. And it doesn't hurt.

where in your legs?

I have experienced a tingling of my legs/thighs, but it's probably more in my skin, after skiing in cold weather and then coming inside.  It's kind of ticklish feeling.  Nevermind...

Mine sound like rice crispies , but I need new knees. Is the popping causing any pain? It might just be a legament or tendon moving.

It depends on where you're talking about in your legs, but I know that the joint where my femurs attach to my hips pop sometimes while or just after I'm exercising.

I know that in this case, it's pretty much the same as when people pop their backs sometimes -- your legs have sort of slipped out of alignment a bit and they're moving back in their ideal place.

I get the same thing, Clampers - sort of a cross between tingling and popping?  Almost like your muscles are electric and jumpy?

I would guess it's a nervous system thing related to increased circulation, but I dunno.  I don't think it's harmful.

That's exactly what it feels like, @purespark. It doesn't hurt or worry me at all...I was just wondering if anyone know what it is...I would venture so far as to say that it's caused by exercise, but I just don't know what is happening exactly. :)

After googling, the most common explanation appears to be this:

That popping feeling is called benign fasciculation. When you work your muscles they contract and the blood vessels dilate. When you are done exercising and your body is returning to a normal state the twitching can occur. It should go away shortly after you finish your workout. This is normal after a good walk or jog..and usually sitting to rest. The feeling results in a "popcorn" feeling at the skin's surface.

(from a not-so-reputable source... but it makes sense)

Some people think it's associated with low blood pressure.  I do have low BP, but not abnormally low.

I get this in my thighs too, on the top front bits. It's a weird feeling but I just presumed it wasn't much to worry about. I don't have low blood pressure- though I do have pretty poor circulation and just put it down to that really.

The only thing I can thing of is possibly a tendon (the IT band runs from your hip down to your knees and then your achillies surprisingly runs up your ankle and wraps around the back of your calf to your knees as well, lots of injuries lots of learning lol)

Another would be nerve ends might be caught up in something? or damaged? That would be hard to tell because you would probably feel numbness as well.

Tingly...probably blood circulation.

I have one leg that is rotated funny in my hip so my one hip pops all the time randomly but less these days (the doctors are surprised I dont have any problems running lol) you didn't mention if it was close to a joint or straight on the muscle, so I thought I would share that info as well. Doesnt hurt to get things checked out sometimes :)
