P90x with a twist

Quote  |  Reply

I have recently finished the ASYLUM and now I want to focus more on toning up my body.  I was considering doing the P90x program but switching out the cardio and yoga workouts for other videos from both the Insanity and Asylum programs. Would this be worthwhile or should i stick strictly to the P90x program?

lift weights, problem solved.

I would but I seem to have more motivation when im doing the videos, and i cant afford a trainer.  I just want to get the most results out of exercise and such.

what are you stats? do you still have significant bodyfat to drop?

If I had to guess I would say that, that many "resistance" videos wouldn't allow for a proper recovery.

Yah, you need the time off between the high-intensity days to recover properly, but since Insanity and Asylum are technically sort of cardio I suppose you could give it a try - you should be operating at a fairly high level of anaerobic conditioning after doing the programs so it could work. I would do the program as written for a week first, then sub in your alternatives and see if you were able to recover in time for your next workout or whether the intensity overloaded your recovery capacity.

Don't ditch the yoga though - I've heard reports that the yoga segments are fairly boring, so you could potentially swap it out for some other yoga videos, but trust me, recovery workouts and flexibility training are very helpful parts of a fitness regime. Given the high intensity of everything else, you need programmed recovery workouts that ensure you retain mobility and flexibility, and most people find that yoga is more motivating than workouts based around stretching and mobility drills. The only issue I've ever had with yoga is when people try to make it the only component of their fitness plan

Wow! :)

If you're going to replace anything, I'd replace Plyo-X and Cardio-X with other options from Insanity or Asylum.  Yoga-X is considered dull & boring by most, but that's because of the pace.  However, it's some of the best stretching and static-strength poses in the entire program.

It takes a while to reap the benefits, but I did notice that it improved my performance in the other workouts over time (maybe a couple of weeks in, after I got over myself and started doing Yoga-X on a regular basis).

But since you've done Insanity & Asylum, Plyo & Cardio will probably seem like a total cakewalk.

Oh, so you have been out here to the affluent surburbs where I work and see the bored rich housemoms with nothing to do during the day....! Wink

I would agree with the fact that you should definitively keep Yoga in the routine it make a huge difference.  I would substitute the Cardio/Kempo/Plyo with Asylum.  My husband does the P90x and Insanity hybrid.  Are you registered for a free beachbody account?  You could find a hybrid schedule to help you figure out the best way to lay it out.
