question about swimming (freestyle/crawl)
So I did a few extra laps today, and decided for fun to log those separately (and am glad to see my lap of butterfly burned more than my laps of backstroke and breaststroke, because it bloody well felt like it!)
ANYWAY, I noticed when looking them up that there was a variety of results for freestyle, or crawl. Which *are* the same thing, aren't they?
Now I don't know which to log the majority of my laps as - if I pick the 'crawl' one [http://www.calorie-count.com/calories/activit y/539.html] it has me burning 645 calories. But if I pick 'freestyle laps' [http://caloriecount.about.com/cc/activity/53 4.html] I'm only burning 565! Aren't they the same thing though?!
Then there's the fact that, while I mayn't be going amazingly fast, I'm not horribly slow either. Today, my 3km of freestyle laps took 85 minutes so that's roughly a half hour per kilometer...not going to win any Olympic medals, but I did pass the other girl in my lane four times in the twenty laps she was with me for.
And lastly, I'm not sure I'd put myself into just moderate or light effort. I don't sprint by any stretch, I keep an even pace (and okay, do maybe six or seven sprinted laps all up, though not usually all together) and I don't want to say 'vigorous' effort because that makes it sound like I am racing! I need a category for medium speed and decent effort ;)
Soooo...anyone got any ideas which I should log as?

Hmmm... I thought they were the same too...
Maybe either 'crawl' at moderate pace or 'freestyle' at vigorous?
I would look at how many calories you burn doing butterfly and use that as a kind of guide, as well. You already know you don't burn as many calories per km, for example, doing crawl/freestyle as doing butterfly.

a lot of people say that "freestyle" is doing whatever stroke you want so maybe they have that and "crawl" because they know that older people call what i would call 'freestyle' 'front crawl. it just depends on who teaches you what but because of the calories i'm think that crawl would be what you call freestyle and freestyle could be any stroke. sorry if thats confusing :]
