Does running make you hungry?

I have been using CC for about seven months.  In that time I have kept my calories to no more than 1,500 per day.  In the last three weeks I have increased my daily runs to 3.5 miles (up from 2).  I have been so hungry that 1,500 calories just isn't enough.  I have been eating about 1,650 to 1,800.  My weight has stayed about the same, I'm down two pounds for the month of December.

Just wondering if anyone else has had the same experience.  Should I continue my increased calorie intake to support the daily exercise or sacrifice and try and stay at 1,500?  Please let me know what you think.

I find that running does make you hungry, especially the day after a long run.  When I was training for my first marathon, I had to basically focus on eating maintenance calories the month before the race. 

Running also makes me hungry and I've definitely increased my caloric intake since I've increased my running.  I still try to keep about a 500 cal. deficit so that I'm still losing but it's at a slower rate than it used to be.  I probably average around 1850 cal's/day but I burn about 2200-2500 cals/day depending upon how hard I work out.   Good luck!

running has never made me more hungry in fact i think it decreases my appetite.  spin or the elliptical never increased my appetite either.. they also decrease it.  weights or body pump class (weights) have no effect.

swimming on the other hand makes me very hungry!  surfing does also.

Yes... it increases my appetite.   In fact, I've found that too much exercise (within limits) makes it more difficult for me to loose weight.    If I work out hard my appetite increases so much that I eat too much.   If I don't eat, I have a hard time keeping my blood sugar level up for workouts, get hungry quickly and have a much harder time not overeating.   


For me, moderate exercise and maintaining a net calorie deficit seems to be an easier method of weight loss.


Different strokes for different folks though. 

Running will initially make me hungry but my body will hit a plateau and my metabolism will be stagnant.

You can try to up your calories but not too much, in case there is unecessary weight gain.

Anytime you burn more calories without taking more in, you are going to be hungry.  I like the advice to keep your deficit consistent.  If you are burning 300 more calories a day, then up your intake up to 300 more calories.  If you can do fewer, then that is the way to go!!

It takes energy to run.  Congrats on (almost) doubling your daily distance!!

The same thing happened to me when I picked up  a high intensity exercise (kettlebells, in this case). I was *starving*, and it wasn't something I could get around or ignore. I ate more for the first month, and once I got used to the exercise, was able to stabilize and go back to the regular calorie counting routine.


I second wesmckean's notion of eating at a constant deficit instead of constant number of calories regardless of activity. I try and keep a 500 calorie deficit a day (a loss rate of 1 lb a week). I've had a much better relationship with diet and exercise when I started doing that. The old way of just calorie counting often left me tired and worn out, and there wasn't much incentive to put in more than my assigned minimum.

It's actually increased the amount I exercise, from every other day to almost daily, because the option of eating a 500 calorie deficit from what I burn with sitting around at work all day isn't' very appealing :)

Short runs don't make me hungrier, but long runs definitely do, either that day or the day after, depending on the timing of the run.  I increase my calories for long runs, but maintain a deficit.  Not an ideal one, but, heck, I love running, and I'd rather enjoy my running and lose more slowly than stiffle my running with insufficient fuel, and lose faster.

Try eating a banana before you do any exercise, i'm not sure how it works, but i've been told by several people that if you eat a banana b4 exercise you have more energy, but you still burn fat!!! i tried it and it really works, i swim 3 times a week (either 8pm or 8am) so i am usally tired b4 but once i eat a banana and get in the water i can sprint without getting half as tired!!!! you should try it!!! XD

I have always had this problem, but now that I am actually trying to lose weight it is frustrating. I usually run around 4 mile a day, but my appetite is huge after I run. Sticking to my daily calorie requirement is tough.

Yup, definitely the most hungry the day after a long run. I did a long run tonight, ate two big bowls of spaghetti for dinner, but am expecting to wake up tomorrow morning starving. To the OP, yes, you should up your calories. If I were you I'd aim for about 2000 calories a day. You will lose weight, and you'll perform better on your runs. I feel so weak running on days when I don't eat enough, and I end up burning less on those days because I don't run as fast. You can have your cake and eat it too :)

Are you drinking lots of water?  I find that it helps both with hydration and hunger... to a point anyway. I always have to make a point of it or else I just don't drink enough

I have to say I just increased my mileage to about 35mi/wk and I feel more hungry.
I guess I responded last year thinking back to running when I didn't log calories I didn't realise how much hungrier I was.  (and I have run 50+ mile weeks).
But the 10 more miles a week I'm doing is causing about a 200/day calorie increase.  Oh well I enjoy the miles.


Now I wouldn't want to log calories and swim because that made me far more hungry!!
