Are Supplements like Whey Protein safe ? !!

Quote  |  Reply

Hi! To obtain daily protein values for work outs, use of Supplements like Whey Protein for a longer period of time, say, 1 scoop of 30 grams of Whey Protein Powder everyday for 10-15 years safe ?  If its not safe what could be the possible hazards?

I've heard there are lots of artificial colors and chemicals in these supplements that are dangerous ??

Pure whey protein is absolutely safe. Pure whey contains nothing but...well...whey.

Many shakes and protein powders do contain large quantities of junk that is best avoided. Just make sure what you use only contains "100% whey protein isolate".

whoever told you protein pwders are unsafe gave you unreliable information. Of course they are safe. People who say fake sugar is not safe are right... but studies have shown for fake sugar to be unsafe a person would have to digest 4 oz per day ..... nobody even comes close to doing that. The whey protein from a shake comes from milk. Therefore, it has a very similar amino acid profile as a glass of milk. Milk is completely safe unless your intolerant. I have taken whey protein isolates for 4 years .... no side effects and there will never be any side effects. Protein shakes are completely safe just remember to check the calories because some can have 1000+ calories per shake.
Talking about Pure and Original Whey Powder, Which is the best Whey Powder in Market ?

Jasontarin, let me get this straight your 23 built and your on this site to maintain.

cool,

I have notice other guys on this site that are also ripped. if you can give us guys who are working at losing the fat and building the muscle ( to lose the fat) a little advice here and there. I'm 47, lost 47 lbs. I work out hard ( at least i think so).

I get very confused on Cal to consume (2400 a day) good carbs (150-200 a day)

protein(150-200 aday) good  fats (35-50 a day). clean foods, good quality whey (brand name) creatine,  I get the mags, got the books, go on other sites but it still confused the heck out of me.

I meet this girl who works at a vitamin shop (my wife was with me) and she told me to cut the carbs and increase my cal. she also told me she was 125 lbs 5'4" and consumes 3000 cal. She's a trainer , and for someone like me who is losing the fat to increasing my cal is the opposite of my thinking.

I also take vitamins. I have a ruptured disc in my lower back and tears in my knee.

My doc tell me to keep it slow and be careful.

Any advise you guys can give will be great. Thanks

Avoid whey if you are lactose intolerant or allergic to milk, but I don't think they're necessarily bad to include in your diet. Like anything, use moderation.
abner check your mailbox... sending you some info.

btw .. im only 21
Whey should be fine, don't worry. You only have to be warry when you're taking a lot of vitamines. Try to get those through the foods you eat as opposed to vitamine supplements because those can be hard on your body after a while (happened to my grandma).

missgendale, can you be more specific as to what happened? I'm very curious about the adverse effects of taking vitamins.

In general, there is little research actually saying vitmain supplements are good for you.  In long-term epidimiological research, they have little to no effect, except sometimes there are actually more risk factors for those who take vitamins (i.e. male smokers).  But these aren't strong enough research designs to prove any sort of causation.  IMO, they probably do basically nothing and will not harm or hurt most people.

Whey is safe.  If you consume dairy products, you consume whey.  About 80% of the protein in milk is whey.  That liquid stuff that forms at the top of cottage cheese or sour cream....whey.

Like the others have said, whey is just protein derived from milk.

Whey is only dangerous if someone starts drinking it exclusively in place of food.

As for the safety of vitamins- I personally don't take any because I know I'm pretty much getting all the vitamins I need from food. Some vitamins can be overdosed on (like Vitamin A)

Is it weird that I really prefer lean red meat over supplements? I do drink my MM before a workout for energy but that is about it.

No, in fact red meat is probably the best supplement there is.

Tasty and full of protein and creatine. Can't lose!
